  1. All true at times. As you would know SOP's are developed for an individual company, outside of their cockpit they don't apply to anyone else. It's never a perfect world in the R/T world where we have a wide spread level of experience using the same airspace. It can't be fixed mainly because what is 'fixed'? Personally I adapt my R/T to suit the situation on the day, the following day it could be entirely different. Like all rules & regs they really are only a basis in which to work from. Having good situational awareness is ones best defence
  2. It's always an interesting subject the etiquette of radio calls. Pilots have been talking about it since the Wrong Bros ever left the ground! The CAAP is a good guide and the biggest single ticket item contained within is in the definitions section, Airmanship, something that is sadly lacking a lot of the time! I have flown A/c from small SE (the most fun) to high perf turbo prop to high perf jets inc heavy metal and I've experienced some shocking R/T calls or lack there of from ALL levels of pilots in a CTAF!
  3. Doing some research Vs X 1.3 would be around 91 kts. Call it 100 on App, 95 over the fence. Still quick enough. Those figures are based on MTOW, not likely in most cases on Ldg. Great looking aircraft, such a shame and utterly tragic. Hope the family know that there are aviators out there thinking of them in their time of need -:(
  4. Oh how tragic, we all feel it when a fellow aviator leaves the living world under tragic circumstances. May the family eventually find peace in the fact he passed over doing what he loved. RIP
  5. What model drone is it? Drones are most known for their fool, proof operability, the easiest thing of all r/c toys, heli's being the hardest like I learned on years without a gyro! All drones are gyro stabilised these wth a lot coming out wth baro capability as well even in cheap ones. The easiest drones are those that have the right stick set up as a heli cyclic commonly known as Mode 2. Keep at it, plenty of advice available if you need it
  6. There is no way the authorities can control drone operations effectively, only a small percentage would be flown within the scope of CASA's rules, just a fact of life as laws/rules are optional in everything we do especially when it comes to forms of transport.
  7. I've been using Mr Sheen or similar for many many years, in fact I treat my whole plane with the stuff, smooth and shiny results -:)
  8. That's just speculation, flying outside he CG limits means unknown territory! The event was mishandled, that much is obvious but beyond that we simply don't know. It is however a good example of what NOT to do!
  9. Hopefully this event will have a positive effect on those that fly without careful correct consideration of their legal responabiltes.
  10. That was a terrifying time for those poor souls onboard. The two in the cockpit rule was a knee jerk reaction at the time, it's now slowly being unadapted due common sense!
  11. Personally I can see a very large association to 9/11 from the gen publics POV especially when you take into account a fighter jet was involved. At the time few knew it was a disturbed employee, could have been very different, so yes to me it's very relevant & would have been more so had he been in the air for longer over a built up area.
  12. So sad really, he managed to hide an obvious severe mental health issue. Flying the plane was the easy part, going thru with it would had been a huge challenge! RIP, nobody wins here
  13. "............there are aeronautical abortions like Airbus aircraft with their appalling un-ergonomic cockpit philosophy. Interesting analogy there seeing as Airbus are now the most popular Airframe especially in the single isle twin jet!
  14. For too long the grubby majors have been able to pick & chose from a well supplied stock of GA pilots & Defence force personnel, transit forward the last ten years or so with the impact CASA has had on unsustainable regulations designed to destroy GA with zero vision and the fact that short term gain/profits from the grubby majors with major reductions in local workforce has left us with today's outcome, an industry now in an almost irreversible decline the likes of we have never witnessed since the Wright Bros first left the ground! RIP a once great nation of vision & prosperity!
  15. Well said With our grubby Govt in bed wth big business like the SkyGods (QF) this is a sad day for Australian commercial aviation!
