Is it possible to safely use 18mm coolant hose where Rotax calls for the difficult to source 17mm?

many thanks

not if it is 24/23 registered not difficult to source Bert Flood can supply but will drain your bank account

I second Mick W advise regarding dimensions and would go further & include 19/experimental/kit built Rotax 912/914 powered aircraft - why use a hose that may leak when the correct hose is available - false economy.

I do not agree that your bank balance will be drained - the 17 mm hose supplied by Floods comes as a straight length that you cut to fit PLUS one short bent length that is purpose moulded for your application - use the correct hose clamps for best security.

If you click on Downunder's advice you will find my experience regarding hose replacement - NOTE radiator hoses I used may not suit your application.

Repco staff have significant room to negotiate sale price and will take back/refund unused undamaged clean parts.

My local Repco is very helpful with selecting radiator hose profiles.

No, you should never rely on the hose clamp to seal the connection between any hose and what it's attached to. This is not only sound practice, it is likely specified in AC 43(... whatever it is) that specifies aviation maintenance practice. The hose must seal by itself. The clamp is only to mechanically retain the hose on the connection, not to make the seal.
