Anyone rented in the USA and had travel insurance cover you?

Anyone been to the USA on holiday and done a checkout and rented a plane with a PPL, and had a travel insurance policy from Australia cover you?

I am not able to find anything on offer that allows it. They all specifically exclude anything with a motor and some call out any aircraft that isn't RPT with you as a passenger.

Check out the fine print for your credit card(s). I understand many will come with free travel insurance so their PDS' might allow it if you get lucky...Then again, you might need to see if you can find a stand-alone policy for the duration of your travels.

There are no standard travel insurance policies offered by Australian Insurance companies that will cover you as hirer and pilot of a light aircraft.

You are best advised to contact an insurance broker who can then advise which company would be prepared to take the insurance risk.

If the broker finds a company who would insure the risk, it would be a special policy just for your circumstances, and you would have to outline every detail of what you proposed to do.

The premium would likely be quite high, as flying light aircraft is regarded as an extremely high risk activity by insurance companies. You would also need to specify exactly what you want covered.

The company may elect to cover you for personal death or injury as a result of private flying (as passenger or pilot), but decline to insure any risk associated with claims against you for loss of the aircraft whilst under your control, or claims arising from death or injury to your passengers, whilst you were in control of the aircraft.

Get some quotes from the US. It's their airspace so they have all the risk data, and because of the number of people paying premiums, they're usually a lot lower than what we would pay.
