Depends.........................what do you do if the aircraft doesn't have a stall warning? Safe slow flight can be achieved without reference to an audible warning or an airspeed indicator.

 

You make a good point Student Pilot. I watched the vid of the Cessna and had meself sitting in the drivers seat of it and fergot other aircraft exist..?

 

Agreed, “safe slow flight can be achieved without reference to an audible warning or an airspeed indicator”. Though, what I’m putting forward is not to be low and slow around the rotor turbulence oft found around trees. The video aircraft is practically dragging its wheels though the tree branch’s whilst at min speed - To me, thats a worry.

 

Looking at the comments in the C130 prang thread shows many have the same concerns I do re low and slow.

Stall warning devices are or should be set to activate approx 5kts above the stall speed and remember the published Vs is the minimum speed at which the plane is still fully controllable. A plane with a stall speed of 50 kts should still fly at 50kts, 49 kts it's done and dusted??

Re the videos - That flying on the stall warning buzzer whilst approaching over trees made me hair stand on end. On a properly calibrated installation there should be a ‘margin for error’ in them buzzers, though it ain’t much.

 

In Oz much of the time there’s a bit of wind blowing and oft times a major wind dumper around trees. On short final more air speed gives yer that ability to do that auto reaction pull back when you hit the big kahooney dump ride that otherwise would have given yer an auto auger dart approach.

 

Years ago I were standing at short final when a very high time, very highly experienced pilot got dumped on short final. His years of airline flying, right up to boss boy check and trainer time, had not prepared him for flying low and slow around the trees. He did walk away though the aircraft were turned into components.

 

More speed better - the only time yer should hear the stall warning during approach is at round out.

 

As far as I can work out, if the vortex generators are fitted, then the angle of attack at stall will be increased, the stall warning will go off at the same angle of attack as usual, and therefore the stall warning will go off at a higher speed above stall speed. So, if the warning usually goes off 5 kt before the stall, and the stall speed is lowered 5 kt, the stall warning will go off 10 kt before the stall.

 

I agree with you that having the stall warning go off during a turning final is not a good idea. I the first landing, the stall warning went off *and* he did not use close to all the strip. I would have thought that the safer thing to do would have been to come in faster and use more of the strip to stop.

I have flown aircraft with and without VG's, never been able to tell a big difference between the 2. The aircraft fitted with VG's did have a VERY slight firming of the controls at slow speeds, couldn't tell a lot of difference with take-off/landing speeds.

Could only be I'm still learning to fly and haven't fully got the grasp of it yet :oh yeah:

I'll admit I did only watch a couple of minutes before I nodded off watching the linked Vid. Was there any conflict of interest or admission of commission/gifts/gratuity/donation/remittance/handout from VG sellers admitted during the video?

I know it's not a requirement with yotubby to have any basis in truth or factual basis, most is taken as truthful.

The bush/stol market in the States has gone mad the last couple of years, the likes of a Super Cubs bringing stupid money.

Just listened a bit further. Its an ad.

The way I look at VG's is that if you need them in order to operate in and or out of a strip then you are living on the edge! If it's a few knots between running out of a Rwy or not then you are an accident waiting to happen! I used to drive a PA31 with VG's which gave you a greater MTOW but to me it was just an excuse to cram more in!

Too, he has a angle of attack indicator. It would be nice to know what his AOA is when he is coming in to land and what that means.
