Very sad. Appears that it was a training cross country flight. My condolences to the family and friends of the 2 POB. Let's hope there is no wild speculation as to the cause before the ATSB publishes its report.

Brisbane Times says the Qld police "Forensic Crash Unit" is investigating, so ATSB has probably decided not to investigate. If so, that unfortunately means we'll get no useful information.

As has been said before, RAA can only get involved if invited by the relevant authorities, albeit that they do proactively offer their services.

Is there really such a thing as the Forensic Crash Unit? Or is this a reporter making up a name or extrapolating from a traffic accident investigation unit. I was only aware that CASa and ATSB have the mandate to investigate aircraft crashes

Could be wrong but always willing to be corrected and learn.

This is my thoughts on accidents and how it unfolds.

The Police will find the cause of death and report to the coroner. The ATSB are interested to find the cause of an accident so air safety can be improved. The RAA / CASA obviously needs to know about accidents and aircraft faults to improve safety and they are the ones to dish out punishment or retification to all at fault to try and prevent more accidents. When people are interviewed about accidents from the ATSB they can not discuss these details with anyone as a document is signed to prevent discussion. ATSB findings are made public. So wild speculation is very unfair to people who know the facts or at fault or witnesses that have been interviewed by ATSB as they are forced to stay silent. Also speculating makes our sport look more dangerous than it is and unfairly judged.

I write this to make people think carefully about wild speculation or pointing blame to any and I do feel for the loss of fellow aviators and my condolences to the family and friends.

This is an extremely sad day for all of us here in Bundy and the aviation community.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the student, instructor and the flying school owner/operator.

As mentioned above we would all appreciate it if everyone refrains from speculation to the cause of the accident out of respect for the people involved.

All will be revealed in due course when the investigation is completed.

My view has always been that all RAAus accidents should be investigated by either trained RAAus representatives and/or the ATSB at least. Aviation accidents are a specialist area and should be investigated as such and on conclusion the results be made available to whoever feels they may benifit from it in a reasonable time span.

Tragic. Im appalled at some of the pic's getting around. Makes me sick that they leak out so quickly.

Thoughts are with the families and friends of all who are involved. We have had a shocking 18 months in aviation in australia.

It has been reported that the student pilot was from Gladstone & a member of our newly formed aero club. My condolences to those effected by this terrible loss.

Whilst trying to establish this fact I came across this pathetic piece of journalism on the Gladstone Observer newspaper website......

"A GLADSTONE man has died after the single engine wing ultra light he was learning to fly crashed."

Sincere condolences to the families and indeed the whole aviation community at Bundaberg.I hate to bring this up again (there are plenty of threads on this theme), but this will not happen. All will not be revealed and we will not be able to learn anything from this tragic event that might help keep the rest of us safer. The ATSB only investigates RAAus accidents rarely in special circumstances. So it is left to the relevant police authorities and perhaps a coroner. The results of these investigations are not released usually. If RAAus does become involved and investigate they tend not to release any report either. From memory the last time RAAus released a report was 2005.

It's wrong for people to fabricate imaginary processes which don't exist. That doesn't help anyone, and doesn't bring us any closer to a system where we get timely information to prevent repeat fatalities.
