Guest Old_Plane_Nut Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 My Mate Andrew at Somersby had a forced landing on Lakes Entrance Beach last week in the Pietenpol Aircamper. Flying at 500ft along the coast and gone to add power to climb away only to see the oil pressure fall away, the oil temp to go off the clock followed by the water temp. He had 5 hrs up on a recond E81 and we believe a combination of a tight engine, the redrive belt being too tight and carrying a passenger for the 1st time has made the oil run too hot and break down. Before flight he dipped the oil and it was clear. Dipped the oil on the Beach at it had gone Black but did not smell burned. Sent the oil away for analysis but the results tell us nothing Very lucky to get way with the Landing as he ran into soft sand and then started to flip over. The was stopped by the vertical postion of the Prop which snapped off but stopped the aircraft flipping on its back. A major excercise getting it off the beach and trucking it back to Somersby. Having a new prop carved at the moment Jim
rick-p Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 The main thing is that you both walked away and is the most important thing and always good to hear. Thanks for sharing. Rick-p
Deskpilot Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 As I read it, you weren't in the plane Jim? Andrew, his pax and his plane had a lucky escape.

monty Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 Glad to hear you both walked away from it. It could of been a lot worse. Thanks for letting every one know about it, we can all learn from other peoples experience. Monty
Guest Old_Plane_Nut Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Thanks for the best wishes Thanks everybody for the best wishes. I was not in the aircraft only helped organise the retreival from the beach. The pax was his girlfriend who had not flown in a light aircraft before, Very gutsy lady. This did not phase her and she will go again when the plane is ready. Says a lot about Andrew and his skills in landing the aircraft and keeping his passenger informed and calm Jim PS sorry to have missed you at Luskintyre Ozzie
