Yenn Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Does anyone have any experience using the Jab 8 cylinder engine. I am considering using it to power an RV4. Comments good or bad would be appreciated.
HEON Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Could try Supermarine Spitfire 07-32029619 as I think they have some expearance with them
sseeker Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Hi Yenn, My instructor is putting one in his RV(8?) I can't give you much information about it apart from the fact it's model name is Jabiru 5100 & it outputs 180hp at 3000rpm, but I can ask this weekend for you. Regards, Andrew
Guest basscheffers Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Someone I know looked into it and the testbeds that have been flying. (Possibly purchasing that aircraft) Their opinion was that it has serious rear-cylinder cooling issues. The whole idea of doubling power simply by doubling cylinders makes me wonder what they had been sniffing when they came up with it. Twice the cylinders, twice the maintencance and twice the failures? By the time you add all the pain and probably cost of non-standard firewall-forward, are you going to save anything over a proven engine like O-320? I'd run a mile...
facthunter Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 dependability. A flat eight is just going a bit too far. I would have to be assured that there were no crankshaft torsional vibration problems, as well as what Bass. says. The Lyc 0-320 is a pretty old motor and I thought the HP was 150 to 160 but you can fit constant speed props and fixed pitch that are certified and that counts for a bit with me. The motor has a high TBO. You would get it in injected form. If you could put up with a bit less HP the Lyc 0-233 at 115 is available and is targetted at LSA aircraft, and you should get the fuel cons. down to 25 Litres PH or less. Nev
jetjr Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 As mentioned speak to Supermarine Spitfire These 5100 didnt do well in first few examples. Broken cranks? I thought they were out of production?
Yenn Posted June 15, 2010 Author Posted June 15, 2010 I was only asking! Thanks for the input. Rod Stiff assures me that there have been no broken cranks except in the prototype. He would say that wouldn't he. What I was after was info from anyone who was using one, not general comments by those with third hand info. I will talk to Supermarine and any info you can get Andrew would be good. Pity I didn't think about Supermarine as I saw them last weekend.
jetjr Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 I think Supermarine had one of the prototypes so may not get a fair report from them
