Hi Steve i found the article, it was written in june 2008. In a nut shell.Airways and landing charges in Taipai = $1 800 USD for a 1hour 20 mintue stop over. 6 of the most expensive fuel ports where in australia.The others where Greenland, Santorini,Leesburg in washington where the landing charges are added into the fuel cost.

 

If you miss japan it probably isnt as bad as i thought.Japan landing charges at Fukoka and Chitose cost them more than in total than the other 38 stops combined. Most of the other airport fees where less than $50.00 US.Surprisingly, stops in russia was no problem.I hope this helps mate, it took 45 minutes to find the magazine LOL.The shed needed a clean out.Cheers

They were probably flying IFR.

 

VFR flights need either a Russian PIC or an approved Russian navigator on-board AFAIK.

Hi Guys, for general Information.I was looking at Aviation Advertiser.There is a advert, from airflite in Vic.In a nut shell, they are saying.Be wary of importing, things can become very costly.They went on to say that they have a A/c, in a container sitting on the dock at fremantle.Cost $300 at day.They also said a Cessna 182 was in a container, opened up by customs.It was full of spiders.The container was removed to a island to be Fumigated.The cost $25 000.

 

This is a advert, because they would rather people buy a a/c from them i suppose, than take the risks of personaly importing one.The ad is for a C172, from memory they have trying to sell for i think $40 000 under the current US rate.

 

I thought i would post this just for general interest.Im no expert on importation.

Ha ha, that company cracks me up..... I feel one leg is definitely longer than the other now just from reading it. Must be using the Labor / Greens advertising Agency, "moving forward" and all that guff. They should go all out and say about the containers full of aircraft that regularly fall overboard en route to Australia and a guy was ruined only last month because his private import sank the ship & he got a $30m bill. Not to mention all those who found out too late their insurance was void because their self imported aircraft was non compliant.....!

 

Whatever it takes to protect their fat local markup.

Well I have made my purchase subject to inspection. I will keep this thread updated when I know all the true costs, but to me I think I will land a great C172 about 30K less that AUD price with low hours frame and motor.

Sounds good Jim, would be great to hear a report on your experience.

 

As I've said on other threads, I have friends who have been down this path, one of them several times and they have had mostly positive experiences. The key seems to be preparation and not trying to cut corners - have a proper pre-purchase inspection done, use a good shipping agent, insure things properly. It may cut into your saving a little, but eliminates a lot of the bear traps that lie hidden out there.

UPdate: Well the plane arrived safely and is awaiting assembly. I have had a small problem that it was not de-registered in the USA so CASA has intially knocked back my rego app but that should be relatively easy to fix. Hoping to have it in the air in the next four weeks.

:thumb_up: It has been mentioned before on this wonderful site.Its imperative that a A/c from the states is deregistered with the FAA before being registered on our register. Dont know why though.

The simple reason is that an aircraft can't have more than one Nationality. This is not an unusual situation. If I buy a car in Victoria and bring it home to NSW, I have to cancel the Victorian rego before I can register it in NSW.

 

You'd find that the same applies if you brought a plane in from New Zealand, P-NG etc.

In terms of importing an aircraft from the USA, I've recently done it (Nov last year) and went about it the wrong way. Send me a PM and I'd be happy to give you my spin on it. Can be very rewarding and a good prospect if you do it the right way.

SO far my import is all good. Just waiting on a CASA inspection and it's all good. C172M with 4000hrs frame 400 on motor IFR Panel.
