hihosland Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 There is considerable areas of surface corrosion on the leading edges of my Skyranger tailplanes and vertical fin. Images below show ( within the limits of me and my basic camera) the bubbling and gritty texture palpable under the fabric and the appearance of the alloy tubes after removal of the fabric. Aircraft has almost 700 hrs in 7 years mostly operating off a gravel runway in close proximity to the sea. I am guessing that fine stones and grit pinging on the leading edges while producing no visible damage to the fabric has damaged the anti corrosion surface of the tubular structure. Any and all advice greatly appreciated. DavidH
Thruster87 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 First rule REMOVE ALL Corrosion [it has no strength] and blend it smooth. Second measure/evaluate thickness left on original structure is still within allowable limits if not a repair scheme has to be worked out eg. a doubler/insert etc. Treat repair area with approved anti-corrosion methods. Cheers
Guest ozzie Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 OK so this is on the outside. i'd be tempted to open up the leading edge and have a look on the inside. My Lazair has similar and was worse on the inside. I treated it and intend to replace the leading edges next when the mylar covering needs to be redone. I did not paint it to cover it up as i want to keep an eye on it.
