Guest rocketdriver Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 I am looking at an aircraft from the states. Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost of shipping a 20 foot container from the East coast of the USA .... It will be a complete container I think ... and are there any "gotchas" to look out for?
djpacro Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Rocket - this was from the east coast 2 years ago: Inspection, dismantling and packing into 40 ft container US$3000 Freight to Melbourne dock US$4500 Customs and local freight to Moorabbin A$2500 GST on purchase price. I paid $1000 insurance for ground risks for 1 year and local ferry flight once I paid the deposit. The company I used here to assemble it has a quarantine station - otherwise there is extra expense in unloading the container for customs inspection then loading up again. Lots of "gotchas" - so more later, and I'm sure that others will contribute too. One of the things that I did is to buy a report on the history of the aircraft from Aircraft Damage History and Ownership Reports - Plane Fax - Home
Guest rocketdriver Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Thanks DJP ...thats very helpful indeed .... Regards RD
HEON Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Just a quick one on GST. GST is charged on exchange rate on date of loading, not arrivial. GST also charged on freight and insurance (up to Australian port).
Gnarly Gnu Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Not an expert but I've gotten two 20' containers of machinery out of New York the last couple of years, the most recent of which arrived in June this year. Price from the East coast is high and is quite dependant on the freight time (simply faster / more direct is more $$). The freight cost was around US$4000 NY to ADL (for fairly slow delivery) Local delivery from the wharf was A$400 Customs clearances / fees was A$900 Plus 10% GST (in my case there was no duty) I thought the GST was calculated on the exchange rate the day that Customs agent processed it (ie around arrival time) but I might be wrong on that. In my case being for business it made no difference to me so I didn't look into this aspect. I would think shipping from the west coast would be both faster and cheaper but I've not done this to date. I said 'about US$4000' for the freight; my NY supplier actually charged me US$3000 for the shipping but I think it did end up costing them closer to US$4000 & they absorbed some difference. I would have no hesitation bringing in an aircraft, kit or parts of such myself if the cost works out & may look at doing so soon. I did some on-line shopping & had the items included in the container. Many things in the US are half the price they are here or better, I shop there quite a lot.
djpacro Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 My agent said there were various options wrt GST. I chose as of day of transferring the funds and GST was payable on purchase price only - needed to provide appropriate evidence. Some of the "gotchas" on my list were related to east coast so more later.
HEON Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 My post was based on what/how I was charged two weeks ago on 40ft from South America
