Tomo Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Possibly doing a run to Clermont in Central Qld this Friday. Thought I'd ask an see if there are any well worn tracks up there, what would be the best way? The less tiger, the more wiser... Thanks Ps. It would be in a trusty J230
DAVID SEE Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Hi Tomo, Mate if I was doing that run, I'd head out to Miles then up over the Taroom strip (a bit more open country going nth. along eastern side of highway for that 20nm from Miles) from Taroom track 10* M for 45nm. brings you over the Gleebe Wear, a little bit of gorge country and sorgum and cotton fields, you hit the Theodore Cracow rd. turn to 341*M for 18nm. brings you to our place, on the bend of the gravel rd. ( Frogs Hollow S24* 49.355 E150* 08.396 ) 1.000mtr. grass strip ph.0414832946. From here, track 325* M for47nm. takes you over Moura and Baralaba to the bend in the power lines, follow these for 50nm will bring you to Capricorn Hway. near a radio/repeater tower about 8nm east of Blackwater town, then straight to Capella (55nm) and on to Clermont (30nm) Hope it helps, its a bit long winded, but it takes you over fairly open country all the way Cheers Davo.

It would be in a trusty J230 Tomo, best route to clermont is track to Miles, then track to Fairview,This lines you up for the shortest run over the Carnarvon/expedition range and puts you smack in the middle of the arcadia valley , then track for Rolleston and up to Emerald/Clermont. Make sure you Travel High On the Miles to Fairview leg as there is quite a bit of tiger country but not as much as going Taroom way.
Tomo Posted September 7, 2010 Author Posted September 7, 2010 Thanks a lot guys, paints a picture for me, as I've never flown up that way before - only driven... and it looks very different that way! David See, thanks - I may even call in if I am running a bit early - If I go, it will be a day trip with a meeting in between. Today is the day I will know if I'm going or not... would be a cool run If I get it.
bones Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Tomo, ill be going back up through that way early next week, sitting Quirindi now, but i just punch in the next stop and sit about 500' over the top of the hard stuff and watch the view, best to fly over all that lovely country between Roma and Emerald is at 500' best seat in the world, unless you dont trust your motor that is :)
Tomo Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 Hey Bones, yeah I like the style, but a bit of clear and height never hurt nobody  Unfortunately I don't need to go on the trip this time now... but we're up there fairly regularly, so I'll get the run again sometime. Thanks for the help. Bones: Give us a yell if you're passing by - Cecil Plains - 0429 680 423
bones Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 sorry Tomo be going back up a little further west, just east of Roma i think. should be back down cabultoore before Xmas, and lets face it the way the first 8 months has gone, it will only seem like next week.
Guest Maj Millard Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 TOMO, JAB 230 huh !....not a big run really for somebody of your talents. I would probabily track Dalby, over Chinchilla, then up to, and over the top of Dingo (look down at my favorite roadhouse with strip out the back), then direct to Clermont. After Dingo you'll go over some pretty big open cut coal mines (German Creek etc) then you'll see several peaks ahead (Peak downs), Clermont is to the left of those peaks. Nice airport, just a little out of town, watch for Kingair traffic as they go in there occasionally. Now since your in Clermont (my birthplace by the way!) you might as well continue North to Townsville !!! Have a nice trip mate, that route will keep you generally over clear landable country. (If you go via Emerald you'll have to go over some tiger country) Call me on my Mob if you have any questions OK...........Maj...
Relfy Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 I'm going to head over to Springsure soon Thomo and I was looking at tracking Roma/Injune and then up through the Arcadia Valley via Rolleston then Springsure. Nice country with a few options. As Jacmiles suggested, it gets a bit rough in there and that is the best way through.
