tommyc Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Hi All, I am a 19 year old student studying Pharmacy at James Cook University, Townsville. I have a great passion for aviation and began my flying at 17 in our family's RAA registered aircraft (Savannah VG) were I obtained my pilot certificate, with passenger and cross country endorsements. Since then I have over 100 hours of flight experience and recently began my PPL conversion in at the at Townsville International with the Townsville Aviation Center in their band new Cessna 172S G1000 aircraft's. I will keep posting updates in regard to the progress of my PPL and relevant achievements. If you have any questions please ask. Tom
Guest davidh10 Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Welcome to the forums Tommy. Always good to see new members with which to share the hobby. You will find lots of info in here and hopefully you will contribute too. Safe flying..
eightyknots Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Hi TommyC: good to see you on the forum :-) I have just started PPL training in a Piper but I want to construct my own plane with the Savannah VG (possibly the XL version) being one on the short list. Any thoughts (positives and negatives) on the Savannah?
tommyc Posted September 9, 2010 Author Posted September 9, 2010 Hi eightyknots, The Savannah VG and VG XL are really good choices, but then again you really need to consider what you want it for. If you are looking for a quality kit that you can build yourself with relatively eazily then Yes the Savannah is great. Its safe, predictable and ridiculously easy to fly. Have had a lot of fun flying the Savannah VG, landing on very short strips, on the beach and salt flats ect. If that is the sort of thing you want to do then great, go for it. If you want something with a cruise speed higher than 85 knots, but with similar characteristics in terms of STOL and configuration then look elsewhere. Tom
Tomo Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 From one Tom to another... G'day! Great to have you mate, good to see another like minded young person here. You probably know my whole life story already, so I won't delve into that. Your field of research is fairly different from mine, if I go anywhere near chemistry (I take that is what pharmacists do?) I end up confusing more people than myself. So I stick to things that make sense.... Like machines and aeroplanes. Hope to catch up with you sometime in the near future - If you ever want to do a week end away, we have a little strip here. Take care, Tom
tommyc Posted September 9, 2010 Author Posted September 9, 2010 Thanks buddy, I was down your way late last year flying some of the east coast with my old man, and headed inland a bit to Dalby actually to see and old friend. How are you going the your PPL conversion thus far (if you don't already have it)? It would be great to catch up some time. Its not often that I see other people my age into these sort of things. Our farm strip is in Central Queensland just north of Yeppoon, if you are ever up that way you are also very welcome. Or maybe just even pop into Townsville International, just don't be surprised when you are sitting at the holding point and a F18 takes off and goes vertical right in front of you. Tom
Tomo Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Nice one, did you guys get to Monto for the Ra-Aus Nor-Natfly? PPL is coming on good, haven't got it yet, but shouldn't be to far away. Just finding time for it is getting a little tricky! If you like a bit of socializing of an evening... the Chat room is good fun
