Ok, so call me silly, but, in parnership with a friend, I have just committed to buy 2 off KR2 aircraft from Canada. Hopefully they are in the container, properly packed and hopefully the local re registration process will go smoothly ..... We will see! ...... Perhaps I should start a blog to record the process, but I'm not sure how ... any thoughts anyone?

G`Day rocketdriver, My first thought is that we need to know what help you require.

Is it in the way you want to present your blog or help with using the software to write it.

Cheers,

bit of both really, Farri. I'm pretty well up to speed with microsoft office etc and use the web a lot for both work and play, but I don't know much about blogs. I've seen some amateur builders with great on line logs of their build, including pictures etc and you can select what part of the build you go to see. Something like that seems a natural one to me, one section, one on choosing and locating the aircraft, one on the logistics and freight costs, one on the registration process in Au, one on repair, assembly and test flying etc etc ..... But the Blogs section on this site doesn't really tell me how to do it .....

Regards

RD

Now that you have described what you want, there should be someone who is willing to help, otherwise, simply contact, Ian , the administrator.

My blog is on page 16 in the blog section,I`m not into writing blogs so I just posted some photos to identify myself.

Cheers,

Frank.

Please do RD, as you probably know there is quite a bit of interest in importing aircraft on here, self included. Incidently I saw the results of someone's "blind" prchase at the field the other day, a simply magnificent RV7A purchased via Barnstormers - so far so good in the process apparently.

First, you need to login, then:-

  1. Select the "My Profile" link at the top of the site page (near settings and Log Out).

  2. In the "control panel at the left side of the page, click "View Blog Entries".

  3. You now have an empty page that says "you have no Blogs". After you have one, it will be listed here. {Blog is like Sheep! the term refers to both the singular collection as well as to the plural individuals} 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

  4. Click the "Create a New Post" button.

  5. Now it is just the same as any Forum Post to edit. You can separate "Chapters" or topics into separate Posts (or Blogs).

The main difference between Posts and Blogs is that they are attributed to you as Your Blog(s), rather than becoming a Thread that soon disappears off the bottom of the Thread Listing page. The other difference is that a Blog is usually a story and contains hundreds or thousands of words, whereas a Post is usually very short (usually less than 200 words and often less than 100) and are all responses to a Thread topic.

Remember to save what you have written fairly often and then re-edit. That way if the connection breaks, you don't lose everything.

You can link "Chapters" together by placing backward and forward links in the text that name the previous or next Chapter and link to that entry by URL.

Thanks David ... thats a help .

Can you search blogs, for instance to find all those that deal with, say, importing a/c or building something? The ones in the bloggs section seem hard to find and to be eomewhat discontinuous ...regards M

No problem. Happy to be of assistance.

Can you search blogs, for instance to find all those that deal with, say, importing a/c or building something?

Yes. You can search:-

  • totally independently from this site through Google or your favourite spider.

  • Within the Blogs section of this site (Forums-->Blogs) using the "Find Blog Entries" widget on the right side of the page.

Search for blogs containing words you specify.

  • limit the search to Blog Titles only.

  • Use "Advanced Search".

If entered from the Blog Search widget, the advanced search form is pre-filled with the search type = blog and appropriate defaults for other fields.

If entered from the home page or other parts of the site (from the menu bar), you need to specify where to search: Forums, Blogs, Groups, Messages, Visitor comments...etc.

Search by "Tags" if people have used them. I suspect that most posters haven't, but this can be a way of finding all the posts that included a specific Tag.

I think the problem to which you are referring is that when someone publishes a story, consisting of instalments or chapters (call them what you want), they all stand alone as individual blog entries and are not collected together as in a book or table of contents. This is a problem that is easily solved by linking the chapters together and perhaps having a table of contents in the first page of the article. You can even start a Thread in the Forums to announce the Blog, provide an abstract and a link to the fist page of the Blog article.

The whole web is just a bunch of individual pages. Provision of navigation from one page to another is the author's responsibility.

Unlike the Forum Posts, in the Blog page editor, you have the option to "Save as draft". That is useful and recognises that a Blog entry is much longer and may be written over a period of days and over multiple sessions. Use it to save without publishing. The entry will only be visible to you until eventually you decide to "Post" it.

Some Blog software allows you to put specific tags (like the ones for quoting) into the text that:-

  • Provide a short entry with just the Abstract and a "read more..." link that then displays the whole page.

  • Can break up an article into pages and automatically provide navigation between pages.

I've not seen either of these facilities in this site. You can see all the supported codes here. Anyway, you can do it manually as described above...

The most detailed arrangement for a large multi-post blog series would be to:-

  1. Use a Forum Post to provide an Announcement with the Abstract and a link to the first page of the Blog series.

  2. Put a Table of Contents (TOC) at the top of the first page or have it as a separate page. Each item should be a link to the page containing that topic or chapter.

  3. At the bottom of each page, provide a link back to the previous page and a link forward to the next page. You can optionally also include a link to the TOC in each page.

  4. Use of "Tags" for each page will assist people who understand Tags to find the posts. Unfortunately to get the most out of tags, there should be a list of standard Tags to use for the site and which creates a lexicon for categorising content. No such scheme exists for this site.

Now it does not matter if your search lands you in the middle of the series of pages, there's navigation in each page to allow the reader to get back to the start or to use the TOC to just jump to the topic of interest.

You will notice in the "Additional Options" below the editing window, you can choose to post in the future on a specific date. ie. The Posted article will automatically be hidden from public view until the set date and thn be published automatically by the system.

Hope this helps.
