Guest pelly-can Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Hi I've been lurking for a while and starting to have some time to play now. Looking forward to taking off and landing. I have been at the controls of a glider once and a single engine four seat Cessna once and been looking forward to getting into my own something ever since. I've been a wooden toy manufacturer all my life, specialising in 18th/19th century toys, now I am getting more into sculpture. I have all the right tools for a homebuild. Now I just need to figure out what to build. Very interested in ground effect boats, have no idea if it is technically a boat or a plane and if they can be registered in australia. Anyway lots of interesting possibilities.
facthunter Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Welcome you have made the first step by posting. Welcome to the forum and keep it up. Nev
farri Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 :welcome:pelly-can,I`d love to see some of your work. When you say,Ground Effect Boat,do you mean the Ekronaplan, Wing-In-Surface Effect-Ship. Cheers. Frank.
Guest pelly-can Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Hi, thanks for the welcome. To Farri the toys are at GoodOlToys.com.au which has become a bit of a wholesale site but there are a few photos there. The Ekronaplan is a version of what I am interested in.
farri Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 pelly-can,I`m not inteding to dissuade you but the construction of two of these craft ( Ekronaplan) was attempted here at Deeral, one on my property, constructed of composite materials and one just up the road, constructed of metal. The metal craft never got off the water at all, the composite craft was a little more successful but every time they tested it there was another problem to contend with, finaly it got to a point where it did want to fly,the problem now was that there was no one experienced with flying such a craft so the guy who built it had to do it himself. The craft was test flown in the Mulgrave river. This time, when full power was applied, it did leave the surface of the water, it pitched up sharply and flipped completely over backwards, landing on it`s top side, fortunately, the pilot who was in his sixties, had forgoten to put on the seat belt, he was shot out of the seat to the bottom of the river, because he was wearing a life jacket,he was taken straight back up under the craft, because the curvature of the wings was now pointing up towards the surface,he was able to slide along the wing and surface. This time he decided to quit while he was still ahead and took the machine to the dump. Several years later a two person craft appeared in Cairns and they claimed that it did fly,I never did see it fly, though. Cheers, Frank.
Guest GordonM Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Hi Frank, sounds like the first attempt 'wooden' work and second one 'steel wooden' work (pardon the pun) welcome Pelli-can. I do hope that you enjoy your flying and building experiences.
farri Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Hi Frank, sounds like the first attempt 'wooden' work and second one 'steel wooden' work Gordon,, I Love it. Frank.
Guest pelly-can Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Thanks for the warning Frank. If I do anything I will start with radio control models and scale up slowly.
