Stuck with problem on "Desire" phone. (ring tone problem/question)

Folks,

I have a Desire (2.1) and noticed a funny thing happening.

My "default" ring is an MP3 sound I recorded.

All/most of my contacts have a different ring to that sound. The others have other sounds again.

(It's complicated).

Anyway, the other day I needed to put the phone into vibrate mode. I could have chosen Silent, but I don't now if this has any bearing on the "Problem" which since happened.

Actually I think it started before, or maybe just after I did it.... I can't really remember, but I wondered what this weird sound was and why the phone was buzzing/vibrating.

OK, so after that "event" I put the phone back to normal mode.

However, subsequent calls got this weird ring tone. NOT the one I set "way back when...."

I also noticed that my SMS tone had changed too.

What's going on? The phone is supposed to have "profiles" so you can change things like ring type/volume and then change them back quickly/easily.

I have found a directory on the phone:

media/audio/ then you have "notifications" and "ringtones"

Question: I put files in there but when I go to settings/tones/what ever the file is not always listed.

Do I need to "reboot" the phone to make them seen? Seems a bit stupid - but we are talking computers, and the one thing you shouldn't do is think the computer does things as you expect them to do.

Can someone please give me a bit of help to what is going on with the phone and why the tones seem to have changed?

I am also (trying) to use other programs to make the ringtone start quiet and get louder - handy for a lot of times.

And another one so that after a certain time it doesn't ring loud then in the morning it can again.

The shut down time, hassels etc are too much for me. I just leave the phone on.

Anyway, for now, that is the best I can do explaining the problem/s I am having.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Wow... Do you have the stop ringing mode when the phone if moved setting on for one? These new phones are certainly more challenging then the last generation.

No, the phone is usually in my trouser leg pocket. That would be just silly to have that setting on.

It isn't it STOPS ringing. The tone used when it rings changes.

I haven't played with that aspect yet FD. I have discovered that the "Silent" profile turns off "Vibrate" too...after missing some calls :black_eye:. Next time I'm in a meeting or concert or the like, I'll use the "Vibrate" profile, which also turns sound off.

According to the Android documentation (not the phone manual), to add your own ringtones, create a "Ringtones" directory in the root of the SD Card and put them in there. I've tested that and the ring tones then appear in the selectable list under:

Settings-->Sound & Display-->Phone ringtone

This setting changes only the "Default" ringtone. ie. the one that gets played if you haven't set a specific ring against a "People" contact record.

One other strange aspect I've noted with sound is that if I put sound files onto the SD Card when it is mounted on the PC and then unmount it, they appear in the Music Library after a short delay, presumably while it re-scans the directories under "sdcard/MP3", however if I use a "File manager" application on the phone to move a sound file into the same directory, then it is invisible in the library and cannot be selected.

Suffice to say, there are a a lot of specifics yet to find out and none of them are in the manual... eg. how to edit the settings of a profile (Mode). Maybe they aren't changeable through settings, or maybe you just change the "Settings" while in that "Mode".

A bit off-topic, but I created a "sdcard/PDFs" directory and have a folder structure under that with aircraft manuals, AIP and ERSA parts and various other useful PDFs. Those then appear in the PDF Reader application file selection grouped under the named directories, which is quite handy.

*The reference to "sdcard" means in the root of the "sdcard" versus in the phone memory file system, which it is also possible to access with a File manager application.

My suggestion is to uninstall the apps you've installed for the ringtone things and see if it does it without them installed. If it does, then it's something to do with the Desire. If it doesn't, then it's something to do with one of those apps.

Then, install one of the apps again (not all, just one). Test it again. If it does it, then it's that app and you'll probably need to find another one that does the same thing. If it doesn't, then install another of the apps and see if it causes it.

Basically, just slowly go through all the apps and test them to see if they cause it (if it doesn't do it when none of them are installed). Then you know what's causing it and can look for another app that doesn't the same thing but doesn't cause the problem. :)

Thanks. I don't want to sound stubborn but could I just stop the app then see what happens? Also while looking/playing if I go to settings/sounds (with the normal profile selected) the ring sound is not always "selected". So to me it looks systemic, but I am still not sure.
