...we could see the beginning of an electric air taxi service. Using the best battery technology, which would give two hours reliable endurance, Electraflyer and Yuneec two-seater descendants start to see benefits for budget city commuting and short regional trips for weekend shoppers. The swap-n-go battery system, which allows fully-charged batteries to always be available, is proving a better option than daily recharging for electric vehicles that are flooding the market, and is quickly taken up for aviation purposes. A recreational commercial licence, which restricts pilots to carrying one passenger, has been instigated with demonstration of RA's continuous safety record and proven reliable aircraft, and a considerable proportion of experienced pilots have taken up additional training to exploit the benefits of limited commercial aviation. Despite the VSTOL performance of these aircraft, the limited availability of city-based landing areas means electric vehicle taxis are necessary for urban commuting from airfields. However, the vast cost savings realised from electric transport ensure that funds are being directed to support a network of electric public transport, with bus and taxi-only lanes becoming more dominant on roads.
