ianwells Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Hi I'm currently building a new savannah XL, Hope to have it flying for next Monto, wherever it is this year. Being as I live in the Whitsundays, lots of islands and water, I'm seriously cotemplating putting some floats on it in about a years time. Is there a Savannah in oz with floats yet? Is it a good idea? Ian
ianwells Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 So no one seems to know much about savannahs on floats, anyone interested take a look at this http://Re: EXTREME short take off in seaplane: Not sure if this link will work but have a look on youtube. Ian
Spin Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 Couldn't get it to work, but found this. Must say I didn't realise that they put the 701 on floats, although being Canadian it makes sense I guess. I suppose my only reservation would be the possibility of corrosion if you used it on salt water - composite would certainly be easier:big_grin:
ianwells Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 there seems to be quite a lot in europe and the states, but non over here. look at this beauty
Ultralights Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 The Savannah kit seller in the USA sells a float kit for $14k with pneumatic operated retractable gear.
KB59 Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Hi Ian Good to see you building. We have a guy building a Sav in Ayr as well. I have lost your phone number so if you pm me I will pass his number on to you if you like. (possibility of corrosion) Have a talk to Maj ( Ross ) He has been down working on those Beavers for years and they swim in salt water all the time. KB
ianwells Posted November 22, 2010 Author Posted November 22, 2010 Hi ken Hows the drifter going, and the other project. Pop in if you're ever passing to see the progress on the savannah. we now have every Sunday off of work so fly down and visit, if the rain ever stops. Regards to Irene best wishes Ian tel 49 471 777 or 0428 446676
Blueadventures Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Hi Ian The project sounds great. Mike here with the skyfox project in Mackay. Ivan just phoned about Sunday when he flies his Kitfox up. I'm off to Brisbaen for the week leaving Sunday morning at 6am so I'll have to catch up next time. I look forward to getting up your way. Cheers Mike
Guest Maj Millard Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Hi there Ian, I don't see why the Savvy wouldn't make a fine floatplane. The 701 seems to work fine, and they are not that much different in concept. A lot of people with floats will try to do a landing or two in a fresh water lake after operating in salt, if it is convienant. Otherwise it's a good washdown with the hose after each salt episode as a must. We have products here at Shute that we protect the aircraft with that work well, if you keep them applied. It is an added workload however, similiar to maintaining your boat in good shape, but not a biggie when you consider what it allows you to do with a plane. Keeping the prop in good shape is another thing to watch. Invariably no matter how carefull you are there will be some spray contact when operating. The 'Kool' props from Russia are the way to go with great performance, and a stainless leading edge insert. I'm sorry but I won't be able to make it Sunday , I am anxious to look at your Savvy project sometime however. I've got Ivans new prop and spinner ready to go on when he gets up to Lakeside. Cheers for now, Ross.
Kyle Communications Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 Hi Maj You mentioned the "Kool" props where can you get them from in OZ or do you direct import them Mark
Guest Maj Millard Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 Hi mark, Ian Ellis the Savannah dealer in Casino imports them and sells them. I flew a Savvy with one on and was very impressed. It transmit power well and is always very smooth. Ians' Ph Nos are Mob:0429891501 or 02 66891501..............Cheers Ross
Cosmick Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Erps I'm sure many have come accross these units. Great for Vehicles and Maritime. Auto units are small and not much weight. Why not Aviation ? Electronic rust prevention, Car anti corrosion protection, lanolin & Rubber rust prevention Regards Mike
