Willborne Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Hi Everyone, Can I have advice regarding the need for Fire Extinguishers in Aircraft as part of the safety kit. Are their certain types made for aviation or is there a general non aviation type available that is broad spectrum and doesn't cost an arm and leg because it has the word aviation printed on it. regards Wet Willborne at Lismore:oh yeah:
Old Koreelah Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I got lucky and found a couple of aerosol dry powder extinguishers made in Tasmania (unfortunately no longer in production). I have one plumbed into the engine bay. Weighs c.800g and makes me feel safer. I regularly shake up the powder, but eventually the pressure will leak out. I have heard of proper aircraft extinguishers which weigh a little more and cost a couple of hundred dollars. Your best extinguisher is careful design and maintenance of fuel lines and ignition sources.
