Guest Maj Millard Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 If you need some fresh reading and have a few bucks to spare, pick up the latest copy of 'Flightpath' magazine (volume22 no 2) now in bookshops. It has a beautifull blue Hawker Seafury on the front cover. Inside one of our ex-F18 jet jockys who has flown all the big piston powered fighters, does a very candid comparison on them all. Great reading if you like that sort of thing.......................................................Maj...
dazza 38 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I have that Ross.It is a great read.I also pick up Flypast December 2010.It has heaps of information on de Havilland (souvenir edition) from Biplanes to Trident.
Guest Maj Millard Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Well I think he came out in favor of the Corsair for experience, but was very favourable to the Sea Furys performance, and it appears he has actually purchased one for himself. It's a bit unfortunate he didn't include a Spitfire and hurricane into the comparison, it would have been interesting to see how they shaped up also..Frankly any of the aircraft he flew would have stood the hairs on my gonads vertical, I'm sure !!....................................................................................Maj
Relfy Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Absolutely mate. Big props + big engines = big noise. I still recall seeing and hearing a P51 mustang wind up for a low pass over Goulburn when I was a kid. Beautiful. Will stick with me forever. Saw a special on the corsair the other day actually. Explained a lot about the shape and performance aspects along with th different stages of it's development. I'd never really thought much of them until seeing that.
Guest Maj Millard Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Relfy, We have something in common. My first warbird experience was also a wound-up low pass at an airfield in the Sydney region by a P-51. Sounded just awsome of course. I seem to think it may have been Schofields in the early 70s..........................................Maj...
