Sorry Roger.

G'day Roger and apologies.

Haven't been slack, have just been flat out on business lately, but making progress as outlined below.

Am starting to see light at the end of the rainbow, but I hope I'm not sucking my eggs before they are hatched.

Both wings are sprayed. That took a little longer than expected as the booth was booked by some other selfish bastard, then my spraying expert got sick, then it rained for 2 weekends straight (which hasn't happened here for 5 or 6 years). Anyway they are done and look like this:

Ailerons and flaps are also finish sprayed:

So are most of the other smaller fittings:

Brakes are also done after a bit of dinking around with the removeable pad system:

How do you like the crown on these 10 ply tyres Brent? Bit better than the flat-top 6 plys?

Inside final fit-up is also progressing:

All systems for the Dynon have been retested and looms have been finished. The engine is about ready for a 1st run ..... maybe tomorrow ?????:

My starter button finger is starting to itch.

Regards Geoff

G'day Roger,

My ticket for the Back-to-the-Nest Dinner is sitting here on my desk ..... so I HAVE to get it completed by then. You know what us tight-arsed RAA guys are like when we might have to kiss $30 goodbye by not going to the dinner.

I'll get it done or else I might have to hide under a blanket in the back of yours .... like we all used to do in the boot to get into the Drive-in or the car races without paying. (You'd be too young to remember Drive-Ins wouldn't you?). If she's a bit tail heavy as you depart YNAR for Bundaberg, it'll be me.

Well progress has been slow as not too much time is available, but below gives you all the guts on what's been happening.

Almost have the artwork done .... hope to have pics of the finished thing later this week.

In the meantime, this arvo it looked like this:

Also got the AvMap back last Friday. It has been fitted with the TAWS and the latest version of the mapping software, and I am WRAPPED. The zoom is now far improved and so is the street and town mapping in the underlying maps.

If any of you blokes or blokettes are looking for a moving map display I would urge you to do a detailed comparison of the AvMap with a 296. The extra screen area is a boon (I reckon).

The AvMap is now installed and is talking to the Dynon so that the HSI is fully operational and it'll do fuel calcs based on route and fuel flow data ..... see the following pics.

Ian ........ has yours had the update yet? If not, get it done quick sticks.

Have also made substantial progress on the fuel system.

Best regards to all

Geoff

Hi Geoff

Getting there! It will have to fly soon to fill the void.

Could you let me know where did you get those tyres please.

I have a vision of my eventually wanting to do a second test flight at Brobenah with three flat tyres.

Regards

Response to Ross's question.

Good afternoon Ross,

I got mine from M & C Tyres, who have advertised in recent RAA Magazines.

The tyres were Trelleborg 10 ply aviation tyres and their contact number is 03 5447 1377.

M & C tell me that they are shipping these tyres all over the country and the reports that I have from others show good results, both for wear and puncture improvements.

Roger has a set on his 230 and they are happy with the result so far.

Best regards Geoff

Captain, have you got the latest Dynon software loaded? There's some new goodies in there with instant wind calcs etc.

Answer to BC's question.

Yes Brent.

The latest Dynon software is loaded and all commissioned now that the AvMap is back & also upgraded and they are talking to each other.

Am very pleased with the combination and the info that they can produce.

1st engine run.

No worries Ross.

I've flown another 160 with 10 plys and it felt great. Based on the discussion on another thread, the extra crown on the nose wheel does their ground handling a power of good.

Bit of a milestone here today.

Have commissioned all aspects of the interior fuel system, have the brakes all bled, and have done a 1st engine start.

Sorry about the 4 pics of much the same thing but I'm pretty happy.

It fired 1st time with full choke and after a short run and a stop to check for leaks, it then fired immediately without choke each time.

No fuel leaks, no oil leaks and nothing fell off, + the engine just purrrrrred each time it was run. Can't do better than that.

Then another 230 flew over just while I was checking for leaks. Is that an omen?

Wasn't you spying, was it Roger?

Now need to close up the clearance to the tacho sensor and continue on, so back to the shed ........... but I just had to post this before having a cuppa to celebrate.

Regards Geoff

Congratulations! That is fantastic! A great milestone!

I went out to Brobenah for the monthly meeting and lunch and did not even get to fly so I might have to drive to Griffith or Narrandera to get my next flight. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms.

John Mason's new (second hand) Dimona was run up for a tappet cover leak test which it failed so they installed a new set of gaskets.

I watched and listened to an experienced trike pilot show a small group of us the finer points of a daily inspection and general care and maintenance on a microlite. It was quite illuminating. I am not rushing in to fly that machine!

LOL - The YNAR Jabbi has been doing some miles lately! It wasnt me Geoff but it may well have been 4815. Although Wally Rudin now has his machine and has been over to Wagga quite a bit in the last two weeks delivering training.

It looks like we may have a few Narrandera guys making the trip to Bundaberg. We will have to get together in the next few weeks and plan our attack!

Its good to see your machine fired up so nicely. It looks picture perfect!

Graphics & other progress

Dear All,

Graphics have finally been added with some minor additions still to come in the next short while.

It's more plain than many, but that's just me.

Am also slowly progressing the balance of the work as time allows, and as you can see I'm still mucking about today with the set-up of the trim mechanism.

Wont be long now before another Jab takes to the wing - once you get your hours out of the way do you have a trip planned?

I think we should go to Darwin next! Why you ask? Because we can! 024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

G'day Roger,

Yes. Lot'a trips after I fly the hours off, and having had such a great time to & from the Wide Bay Airshow.

But I reckon your suggestion of a weekend at Lake Mungo is a cracker as it isn't too far and I've always wanted to go there .... (but not really sure why).

Then there'll be the southern flyin for & with these forum members.

My ears also pricked up at the Red Bull Airshow on 3/4 Nov in Perth too.

Then there's Lightning Ridge for the weekend, and the YNAR monthly BBQ, and ............., and ................

How much time can you get off?

Best regards Geoff

Looking great Geoff.

After your long and well-documented journey, it must be getting really exciting that you're so close. Can't wait to see the trip reports replace the build reports.

Congrats,

Ross

Thanks for that Ross

Keep it coming about your Cheetah build too. I'm enjoying all those as well.

When we are both up and running I'll buy you a coffee in Tumut.

I have always wanted to go back to Lake Mungo. Fascinating place.

I get to Lightning Ridge a fair bit (& Dubbo).

My only suggestion is that you go at around 8 1/2 (depending on hemis) to stay above the turb unless it is late autumn. Gets bumpy under that. Out west, in summer, you need to be on the deck by 10.30am. After 5.30 or 6 can be great too. Watch out for dust devils! I was on (Very) late final into Lridge one day and three of them suddenly sprang up about 3/4 of the way down the strip. I exited the area and watched them go away for a bit :-) Also: if you land say at macquarie marshes or near there, watch out for bindieyes. They will give you a flat type for sure. Interestingly, sometimes it only becomes apparent when you land again after the low air pressure at altitude causes all the air to run out :-)

Oh! Do up a fright plan - my old one for Broken Hill was 5+ hours air time and the Ridge is four so you will need four days there.. one going, one coming, one there looking, one hang over/bore baths recuperation. Ask John Redette :-) Longreach is great but 2 days to get there. If you want to tour, I am happy to join in if no probs... Started an around oz after lreach but got bored by myself and came back..

Another update

Thanks for your 2 posts Graham, and apologies for the delay in acknowledging them. Have been away.

I have a friend who has offered me his hangar if I go up to Lightning Ridge and have always wanted to visit there anyway.

And I understand that the Holiday Place/Resort ?? at Lake Mungo is worth the visit too.

Yes have XC and even hit Bundaberg on the nose (in front, not BO) a couple of weeks ago.

Following is an update to the thread. Mainly just checking stuff and doing a bit of finishing off.

For anyone with a 3300 you will see in post #90 of this thread that the Saf-Air oil drain was too close to the exhaust, and a photo at that time. Well below is the mod developed by/with the YNAR Aviation syndicate (thanks Ian & Roger) and it looks good now.

Have the trim and elevator mechanism & cables all done and to spec.

Cabin-heat "muff" (I love that word) installed.

Lower cowl cooling/extraction baffles made & installed.

And a few other general shots FYI.

The Security Bloke is still there Ross, but he keeps muttering something like "For goodness sake get it done and get out of here" ..... a bit like a few of you are doing in PM's and posts (thanks BC).

Regards to all

Hi, Please be aware of the following requirement/good idea [Fire sleeve ends must be "end dipped" to prevent fuel or oil from wicking into the fibers. The end dip is p/n 5027 from Stratoflex or AE13702-003 by Aeroquip

The fire sleeve must cover all the hose and more than 2/3 of the fitting. None of the rubber hose can be exposed.

For push-on fittings the clamp on the hose must be flat to allow the firesleeve to cover the end of the hose. A gear, pinch or screw clamp is not suitable. "AQP Socketless" hose from Aeroquip (automotive high performance division) does not require or allow a clamp. As suitable flat clamps are hard to find you may have to use a crimped or "field attachable" multi-piece fitting.

The clamp on the outside of the firesleeve must be steel or stainless steel, no plastic allowed.

Clamps of this type are available from:

Oekter http://www.oetiker.com

Band-it http://www.band-it-idex.com

The firewall must be sealed and all opening to the cockpit (rubber/non-steel grommets for the wires and control cables) must be protected with stainless steel covers to prevent fire passage into the cockpit.

The hose end fittings should be steel or stainless steel.

] Cheers

In the aviation industry there are many requirements and good practices. The fire sleeve installation is but an example of Rotax Owners Assistance Network at the following site http://www.rotax-owner.com/support/ROAN%20fireSleeve%20info.pdf. Also of interest: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) AC No.20-7N, General Aviation Inspection Aids Summary, recommends, "all flexible flammable fluid carrying hoses in the engine compartment be replaced at engine overhaul or every five years which ever occurs first". Cheers Alan
