sportaviation Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Hi Geoff, Eddie and Don down here with great contitions, See you soon
Captain Posted November 26, 2007 Author Posted November 26, 2007 Dear Ed & Don I've been watching the clouds every day for the past week or so. Conditions look terrific. Will phone you in the next day or so as soon as I get rid of business stuff. Regards Geoff
BigPete Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Emailed Andy Hollitt today - got an automatic responce to say he was on leave - no indication as to when he will return. I'll keep trying..... regards
Guest brentc Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 You must be getting close Captain. It will be such a big event the first flight that I feel obliged to make the trip up there to see it fly the first time.
Captain Posted November 26, 2007 Author Posted November 26, 2007 Thanks Peter. It will be interesting to hear what Andy has to say. Brent. Will keep you posted as it gets moved to the airport and inspected.
BigPete Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 G'day Geoff - heard from Andy today. ;) He said the cups worked very well and he only needed to fit them to one side of the mount (as per photo). ;) He also told me he sold his Jabiru three years ago!!! :ah_oh: regards
Captain Posted January 25, 2008 Author Posted January 25, 2008 Cover & Doors Have been tied up on business so the build has slid a little, but have been back on it for the last week. The cover is just about complete. Have been concentrating on installing the door jams and finalising the door fit and sealing. I opted to do it last after doors all painted and door seals were stuck on the doors. Probably the wrong move as the jams needed to be heated and bent and twisted to suit the door position. It has taken about 1.5 days per door. I did the rear then the passenger then my door in the hope that I would have the procedure refined before I got to the pilot's door. Sod's law applies and mine is the only one where I am not entirely happy with the fit. Wouldn't you know it. Wings are about to come off for some final work, then another full engine and mechanical run/check .......... then onto a truck for the trip to the airport for inspection etc. Regards Geoff
Captain Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 The Little Things G'day All, In addition to a heap of small completion and finishing off jobs , I have now studied and today completed the calibration and swinging of the Dynon magnetic heading as part of the final EFIS calibration. Also modified the electronic compass module (snip/snip) as per Dynon's service bulletin. Involved magnetic inclination, magnetic intensity input then swinging the aircraft and punching buttons. The results look good. It may not be an airport compass rose ........... but it's MY compass rose. Also adjusted the magnetic compass to as good a compromise as possible. Then did an engine run to check everything out and it started fine and all looks hunky dory. Had to then do about 12 engine starts to get final adjustment of throttle stops for 800 rpm. Am also part sponsoring a young bloke in the Aussie Junior road race championships this year, so have been wasting a bit of time getting his bike done too. All great fun. Regards Geoff
Guest pelorus32 Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Hey Geoff, looking good. Just an off-the-wall thought: how much ferrous metal is in the wings? Particularly in the way of control linkages or anything long? I suspect it's mostly aluminium and composite. However if you swing the compass with the wings off and there is any long ferrous rod in the wings the compass may be off with the wings on. Regards Mike
Captain Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 Thanks for that Mike. You are right, as there is one SS control cable in each wing which come into the fuselage to the seat backs. I will swing them again after final assembly as the electronic compass box is on the floor behind the passenger's seat and it will need a final check with all of the electrical circuits in operation .... including strobes etc, as a few run down the centre of the fuselage in the floor. Same with the magnetic compass with the panel alive and the radio & transponder on (which are the closest electrical items). I suspect that the effects of those electrical currents might be greater than the SS cables. The last couple of days have been centred on getting everything about right and to check all circuits to save being too embarrassed during the inspection. Particularly the Dynon D10A after modifying it as per their service letter. Regards & thanks again for your input. Geoff
Captain Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 Received the oil cooler inlet duct upgrade as per Jabiru's Service Letter JSL 004-1 ..... just 3 days after requesting it by email. Can't complain about that service.
Captain Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 Getting ready Preparations & double checking are ongoing all this weekend for trip to the airport on Monday for final assembly and inspection .......... hopefully the aircraft's last road trip. Guest AusDarren Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 what on earth will you do with all the extra space in the shed? Looking forward to the pics of the first flight! wishing you Fair winds and good conditions Regards, AusDarren
Captain Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 what on earth will you do with all the extra space in the shed? Thought I might whack a 3300 in one of these next .................... . Any idea what the kits might be worth?
Ross Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Hi Geoff All I can say is congratulations for a well deserved magnificent job.;) Green text for envy. Regards
Captain Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 Off to the Airport Well ............ a big day after 21 months. Geeeeezz these 230's must be heavy. Have a look at that loader. Actually I booked it for the tilt tray as this one goes down to 6 degrees and you always drag the **** of the 230 when loading it onto a normal car trailer (unless you use a break-type trailer). Now for you budding builders, let me tell you that it is a good test of a marriage when you raid the beds to drag off doonas to pack around your wings on the back of a low loader. I'll let you know whether mine survives. Arriving at YSWG with an escort. (and thank goodness the doonas are still there).
slartibartfast Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 A truly momentous occasion Geoff - right up there with the fall of the Berlin Wall and glasnost. Congrats. Can't wait to see it. Ross
Captain Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 A glasnost. Ross Thanks Ross. But mine doesn't look as flash as yours. Now ..... I've heard of a Glassair, but what is a Glasnost, what engine do they stick in them, and to what model Glasnost do you refer? Regards Geoff
Captain Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 Help me get to 7000 views Come on everyone. Do your bit and help me get to 7000 viewings before I am forced to bugger off out of the Kit Building section and into the Trip Reports section of the forum. Best regards & thanks to those that have been supportive via the forum, by pm's, thru emails and face-to-face during the build. Geoff
Admin Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 We will get you there Cap't - and I will say that it is not you but us that owe you an enormous amount of gratitude for allowing us to be with you throughout this great build - you have kept us informed every step of the way, the highs, the lows and the exciting times that we believe lay ahead of you - thank YOU for letting us in to your shed with you!
slartibartfast Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Thanks Ross. But mine doesn't look as flash as yours. Now ..... I've heard of a Glassair, but what is a Glasnost, what engine do they stick in them, and to what model Glasnost do you refer? Regards Geoff The Glasnost was a low wing design - a throwback to an earlier era. Powered by Perestroika, it unfortunately proved to be under-powered and failed to get democracy flying in Russia.

Powered by Perestroika, it unfortunately proved to be under-powered and failed to get democracy flying in Russia. You win Ross. You are too good for me. I should have known what I knew for years. Don't play poker with Kerry Packer and don't exchange witticisms with a Slartibuttfast. By the way, Ross. I was going to pinch your idea with my artwork on the Jabiru, however bird footprints don't look anywhere near as snazzy as your big pussy marks. And thanks for your last post Ian. This thread, and these forums as a whole, have been a real pleasure. Regards Geoff
slartibartfast Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Mmmmm - big pussy marks... I might not have mentioned. When I was landing my borrowed Jabiru at the inaugural rec flying fly-in at Camden Haven, I turned to backtrack and a real Jabiru was standing on the runway. True story.
Guest Andys@coffs Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 .... however bird footprints don't look anywhere near as snazzy as your big pussy marks..... Now having been around the forums long enough to understand that and the previous post I can honestly say that I enjoyed a good gut rumbling chuckle for those posts....however for anyone that is new and doesn't have the history, these posts would make their minds boggle. Now in order to maintain the levels of humour, your riposte slarti? Andy P.S I thought a glasnost was a drink that only the bankrupt could afford. Its made of cheap vodka and not much else. Too much glasnost cause an involuntary perestroika straight into the nearest porcelain. The connection with flying is the aerodynamic motion of the glasnost as it and other stomach contents leave the body at speeds occasionally exceeding Vne
Admin Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 And thanks for your last post Ian. This thread, and these forums as a whole, have been a real pleasure. Regards Geoff What do you mean when you say have BEEN a real pleasure :;)4: - you are staying around inbetween your flights aren't you Cap't
