OzRunways News

Recently Apple have forced all content providers to provide an "in-app" purchasing model, but we can continue to offer website subscriptions as well. We are currently writing the in-app software and it will be available shortly. We would still prefer you subscribe via our website though, as this will keep all revenue in-house and keep the costs down for you.

Thanks to all the people who have subscribed so far & told their friends!

New Amendment Out

The next time you open OzRunways it will do a quick self-update and the 10th March 2011 ERSA & DAPS will be available to download before the required time.

On 10Mar11, the app will automatically switch over to using the new publications and the old ones will be deleted. If you don't download the new ERSA & Approach plates, you will not be able to view the old ones on 10Mar - so do it now at home!

This amendment also makes available a handful of airports (mostly Hospitals) that have DAPS but no ERSA entry.

Known Issues:

- You cannot download the next AIP until 10Mar11. We have improved this in the next version so that you can download & view the next one early, but not for this amendment cycle sorry.

CASA legislation update

As you know, we put "Not for use in Air Navigation" on the splash screen. There are various reasons for this such as safety, legal & contractual requirements & the fact that legally we cannot tell people how to use these devices anyway (even if we wanted to). CASA remain the authoritative source of all flying safety legislation therefore we have been contacting them to see whether they are going to clarify use of Electronic Flight Bags (EFB's) in GA.

As it turns out, a lot of people have been asking CASA this question for quite some time. They have advised us that they may be looking at copying & fast-tracking the USA FAA AC 91-78 which is a document that essentially lets small, non-commercial (Part 91) operators use EFB's in lieu of paper when it is functionally equivalent to paper, but suggests carrying paper backups (and at the Captains discretion).

If CASA copy or implement their own version of this FAA document, we will provide information that links to the CASA docs, but once again will not be able to comment on how to use OzRunways and may even need to keep the current disclaimer depending on various circumstances beyond our control. I have no idea on the timeline of if/when these docs will be released.

Also an interesting story from the USA - Executive Jet have recently completed testing the iPad (running the Jeppesen app) with 10 different aircraft types over 250 sectors and are now approved to use it in all phases of IFR flight. The iPad even passed a rapid decompression test to 51,000 ft. Hopefully the iPad2 rumoured for release shortly will improve on this experience with an even brighter, non-reflective screen.

Also, v2.0 - coming soon

v1.1 was rejected by Apple because they changed their in-app purchasing policy. We have decided to combine this feature with a much larger v2.0 update instead. This release will have all the improvements of v1.1 as well as Maps.

We will start with every WAC, VTC, VNC, ERC High & Low, TAC & PCA for around $40 / year. (Yes, really. We don't understand why others charge so much for aviation maps either.) The maps will be geo-referenced meaning if you have an external gps or an iPad 3G, you will be able to see your aircraft position on the map.

ETA about 1-2 months till it hits the app store.

After that, we will look at integrating weather & flight plans. We will email you when it is ready - otherwise if you have any suggestions please hit the blog or email back!

Cheers,

Rowan & Bas.

Just had a meeting with our Android man this week. He's gonna get started in earnest real soon. We were kinda sitting on the fence, not knowing what the popularity of OzRunways was going to be. But know we know it's quite viable over time, Android (and other platforms) are on the cards. Android first of course; those 7" tablets are a good size for the cockpit!

Awesome work team, I can' wait for the maps function. I'm using the trial version at present and it's a great reference, easy to use and clear. Let's hope CASA make a decision soon on EFB use as it's definately the way of the future.
