I soooo want to finish my navs, but being cash-strapped I have to be happy with the occasional session of circuits. I'm trying to rationalise not doing navs with the simple fact that even if I could just afford to finish, I still won't be able to afford to go x/country every 2-3 weeks - so why bother doing navs? Who else is in this position? I need moral support!!

If going cross country is not a pressing issue then just enjoy flying locally. make the most of the rating you now have. practise circuts and aerial work and get good at it. If you want to practise and get ready for your Navs you can always go halvies with someone that is rated and practise map work etc with them. Then when you are not so cash strapped it willl be easier for you to complete your rating.

I feel for you burbles1, but am not in that position.

Bottom line, only you can decide what path you want to take.

My two penneth worth... If you have already invested in doing some Nav training, then I'd be finishing it and get the endorsement on your licence. Even though it may take a while and you may have to fly less often to achieve it. After that you have the choice every time you fly as to whether you do a nav occasionally at the expense of a couple of hours of circuits, or just do circuits.

On the other hand, even without the XC endo, you can still fly up to 25 miles radius from your home base. That's quite a bit of territory, but eventually you will want to go somewhere specific that is further away.

Perhaps you know some others that fly from your AD and can at least go for a ride with them occasionally to mitigate not being PIC as often. I know I've done that for several other pilots or students, on occasion, who were getting low altitude sickness for various reasons.

Hey Burbles, wanna join my club? Been in the same situation for some time now and wonder if I'll ever make it out of the 25 mile radius, legally, and there are so many airfields just that bit further out that I'd like to visit. What's more, I wouldn't need my Xcountry cert to find them. So tempting, but I'm not going to do it. Guess Ill just have to be patient and wait for that lottery win :-)

Burbles1, Are you wanting to fly for the enjoyment of flying or are you wanting to go places and look at the countryside?

Eventually get your cross country endorsement if you can, but in the meantime, keep enjoying what you can do!

It is flying, isn`t it?

Frank.

Just a question... If you don't have a XC endo can you land at another airport within 25nm of your takeoff point or do you have to return to point of departure?

Burbles... stick with it. The way I see it is you may as well be doing training for Navs rather than just paying to hire... at least you are getting a return on your money.

Winsor68,

Yes you can land at another airport within 25nm of your home base, what you can't do it land there and then go another 25nm from that airport, the 25nm rule is from your home base.

Cool!!!! That is excellent news for me... I can hire the aircraft once I am finished my cert. and fly to Mackay's main airport before the tower opens at 0720... and I think Nebo airstrip may even be with 25nm for a nice $100 hamburger.

Sorry Burbles I realize that this doesn't help your situation... wasn't trying to rub it in.

Hey Burbles, just some suggestiions while you trundle the financial wheel we all have to run around..

Try practicing mini-nav's on your own, within the training area- focus on holding heading, lookout, flying straight and level, doing clear offs and try some five mile markers. Yeah I know you probably know your T/Area like the back of your hand but intro good nav practices in this environment and it will help you learn. You can do course corrections, some simple 1/60 calcs etc. You will be amazed how much attention this all requires in the learning stage. Don't forget to aviate first and foremost.

Then when the cash is ready, you'll make good use of your time, be more proficient with multi tasking in the air, and your instructor will be proud of the commitment you have made to the task.

We sometimes have students who have developed well in their basic training, but can go backwards in their flying when starting navs. Remember flying is not yet natural in the early stages( and even when it is, still requires 100 percent focus).

Just some tips and remember- you're not the first one to get frustrated with their progress(for what ever reason). Other wise if it was easy, everyone would do it! But hell it's rewarding when you just "get it."003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif

Hey Burbles you could also fly something really slow so that 25 mile seems like a days adventure.
