Hey guys,

I just moved to Canberra ACT and am desperate to know where i can get my hands on a recreational plane to hire. A jabiru would be best but is not essential. Any help would be very greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Don't quote me but im not aware of any RAA schools in canberra. Golbourn, wollongong or our school at jaspers brush would be some nearby ones.

Cooma (Snowy aviation academy at Polo Flat flies Jabs I think) and Tumut might be some other choices. If you're really keen on driving there are Jabs and Tecnams at Wagga. There is a group in Canberra that is trying to get a recreational/GA airfield built in the ACT which you might be interested in. Their website is here.

Sam, from all these (helpful) posts you will have come to realise that recreational aviation in Canberra or close thereto is just not happening. Not that there are no recreational pilots in Canberra and the immediate region - there are hundreds - it's just that there is nowhere to fly from. Canberrans travel to Goulburn, Cooma, Moruya, Cowra, Temora, etc to find a recreational aviation friendly airfield and community. And by "recreational" I mean both VH and RAAus pilots who fly for pleasure, not profit.

That is why the Canberra Region Aviators Association Incorporated (CRAA) was formed. The link to our website was in Powerin's earlier post. Our Business Case to Government is within a week or two of being presented to the ACT Chief Minister. He has been quite supportive of providing land and some capital for the establishment of a secondary airfield in the ACT, subject to the operation not needing ongoing financial support from government. We can demonstrate in our Business Case that this is eminently achievable.

However, we need our membership to not only be sustained but to grow, demonstrating that a financial commitment from government will in fact generate the economic activity and employment opportunities which we detail in the Business case.

This is therefore a long-winded invitation to join CRAA Inc - $50 a year to avoid that activity far more dangerous than our flying - and that is driving on the Monaro or Kings Highways !!!

Cheers

Checkout Goulburn Flight Training Centre - www.gftc.com.au

I'm doing my RA Aus license there at the moment. They run a 7 day a week training school with GA and RA planes, and have a couple of new Gazelle's they hire out.

Good bunch of people and about an hours easy drive from Canberra.

Hi Sam,

Have you found yourself a plane as yet? If not I can recommend Teraya's Gazelle at Goulburn Aviation - www.goulburnaviation.com.au (separate to the group mentioned above) if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of speed over the Jabiru. She's got a guy doing a conversion to his brand new J170 with a very nice glass cockpit who may be open to the idea of cross-hiring it through Teraya (if enough of us keep bugging him maybe?). There's a couple of other ex-students there who also have Jab's although I think they're 55 registered. Her rates have always been very reasonable I believe (it helps that she has all us happy volunteers always hanging around).
