Tassie Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Hi everyone, Just joined after leaving sometime ago, have new laptop old comp u/s and forgot old sign in so I have rejoined with a new handle and email address. Hope to have more time to read and make postings this time around, was a bit of a fence sitter last time. Still live in the same town, but this time at home not working away all the time, that can change, trying to save money to buy plane. Have not had time to fly in the last two years, but be flying club plane soon a Jab 2200, lightwing taildragger. This will all be new to me as I have only flown nose wheel aircraft, to date. Hope this tells everyone a little about me, looking forward to making new freinds.
FlyingVizsla Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Hi Tassie, The reason your old sign in may not work is because Ian had a clean out a few months back of the inactive ones. But Tassie in South Aust sounds cute! I can just imagine the apple isle sailing up the Yorke peninsula. The taildragger will test your dancing shoes as they take a fair bit of footwork on the ground to keep them behaving because the CofG is different to nosewheel. Landing can be a little harder as it can get airborne again while you are trying to get the tail down if you still have sufficient speed. You can also nose over easier. We have a Lightwing taildragger with short wings and it is a bit of handful. On the other hand the RANS is a lovely docile lady with impeccable ground manners; she just settles and drives straight. The longer wing Lightwing is a much more forgiving one than ours and people just love them. Just remember they bite and treat them with respect. Welcome to the forum! Sue
Gnarly Gnu Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Welcome Tassie! Do I read you right that RA tailwheel endorsement is being taught in Port Augusta? I might be interested in doing this....
Guest turnbase Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Welcome back Tassie, Tailwheels are fun you just have to remember that you never stop flying until it's parked in the hanger!!! You'll understand more when you've had a couple of taxi trips.
facthunter Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Don't give up too easy on the tail wheel. You may seriously question why at some stages. One time believe it or not there was almost nothing else. Nev
Tassie Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Hi Gnarly Gnu, Yes the Port Augusta gliding club Inc is teaching tailwheel, in the clubs lightwing, the CFI from the flying school will do the endorsment, when you are up to speed. He was my CFI when I was learing to fly, He is very good. You are very welcome, we meet every saturday. The gliding club is at Striling North on the old Wilmington Road, just look for the sign. Thanks for your welcome, hope to see you in port Augusta sometime. Tassie
Dr John Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Hi Tassie, I am most intrigued about the taildragger idea. There is a school at Aldinga and I wonder how difficult it is to learn. Dr John
Guernsey Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Hi Dr John, for your information I started my training ( many years ago ) in an Auster which is a taildragger, after about 10 hours switched to a Cessna 150 nosewheel and then around 15 hours later back to the Auster. I had no choice at the time (long story) but coped with it very well, however I would suggest that you select the type of aircraft and complete your training on that type and then do a conversion to the other afterwards. There are pros and cons with both types but having said that I enjoy the two for different reasons. A trip to Aldinga would be worthwhile in helping you decide. All the best Alan.
