Guest burbles1 Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Did my usual jaunt out west today: YBTH-YORG-Blayney-Oberon-Ben Chifley Dam. Conditions were so stable that I just trimmed up, sat back and gazed down longer than usual. I got drawn in to seeing how amazing that little creeks and farm dams look from 1500 ft up. Then I snapped back my attention and realised I was in a J230 screaming along at 110 knots. I just wanted to see more of the little things instead of passing by so quickly or doing several steep turns to stay in one spot. After 80 hours of tearing past the landscape at 100 knots in Jabs, am I starting to get the first inklings of wanting a LP endorsement so I can putter along at 60 knots? Maybe so, maybe so.
pudestcon Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 so I can putter along at 60 knots? Drop another 5 knots in the cruise and you can come join us Thruster drivers!!! Pud
facthunter Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 IF you want slow (and a great view) what's better than a DRIFTER?. No fumes. sitting in a minimum "tub". You could use a Tuft of wool for skid and AoA data. "Classic" experience.. Nev
Guest Rallytoyota Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Drop another 20 knots and get an Aerochute. I have Jabiru SP6 and an Aerochute. Two totally different aircrafts and both are great fun to fly. The Jab cruises at 120 knots and the Aerochute at 40 knots. If its low and slow you want there is nothing better than an Aerochutr.
Tomo Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Yay! Go the Drifter!! :D Definitely do it if you can, it's great fun!
Guest Maj Millard Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Damn that Drifter looks good sitting there with it's new skins Frank !....I'll just have to come up and take it for another fly ? !!............Maj By the way my old Drifter 25-0452 is also getting a new set of skins at the moment. Ken Bates (KB59) who bought her has picked up a very nice Pulsar, and she has to go. So if anyone is looking for a good 582 CB Drifter with all new skins........................................Maj...
Gnarly Gnu Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 I can relate to this also Burbles, of late been looking at the "Dream fantasy" and thinking.... or should that be fantasising?
farri Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Damn that Drifter looks good sitting there with it's new skins Frank !....I'll just have to come up and take it for another fly ? !!............MajRoss, I`ll have it full of fuel and ready to go any time you want it! Cheers, Frank.

Maybe so, maybe so. Maybe a temptation to go over / come over to/from "the dark side" (depending on your point of view)? Trikes can span low and high performance air speeds. Mine with a "Streak 3" wing will cruise (trimmed) between 50 and 60 kn. (Vne 85kn). With an SST wing you can cruise (trimmed) between 55 and 70kn (Vne 85kn). The SST is categorised as high performance. There are also slower wings, although they are becoming less popular among new purchases. P.S. I've had one flight in a Drifter, and that was pretty good too.
Gnarly Gnu Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Sensational metalman, the USA is a really beautiful country with huge variety. I'm off to Alaska in a couple of months, hope to do some mountain flying while I'm there.
Tomo Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Think Slower guys 40/45mph. max I'll have to come down to your place one of these days Ozzie.
alf jessup Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Drop another 5 knots in the cruise and you can come join us Thruster drivers!!!Pud G'day Pud, Dunno about joining your Thruster drivers, as we thought yesterday at Tooradin we were going to be thrusters desert lol. Bunch of us flew down from West Sale and Latrobe Valley for brekky in the old trikes. Had a wonderful brekky mind you, and while standing around near the trikes on the grass parking area beside the runway thinking about suiting up we were watching one of your brothers (i'd say learner Bro) doing touch and goes or should i say kangaroo hopping on the grass strip running on the otherside of the bitumen strip, after watching about 5 interesting arrivals I turned my back when one of our group just happened to say ummm you better look around. Well I/we swung around and watched the boy heading 45 deg across the strip towards us, thankfully i'd say the instructor or his mate took over and swung the hungry thruster away from us and departed almost gracefully off the bitumen strip. Certainly had my attention aswell as the rest of the group, we sort of chuckled about it for a minute as wernt on the menu as it seemed. Just makes a point never to have your back to any aircraft while it is in the landing phase even though we were 70 meters away i'd say from the grass he was landing on. Next arrival was a full stop for a undie change i think, mine only needed half a change lol They dont look all that slow on the ground while the fan is pointing in your direction lol. Cheers Alf

David, Dunno where the 70 kts trimmed speed comes from with the SST, front hole on the hang point dont see more than about 66kts on mine, certainly will do 70+ with a light preesure on the bar but wont hands off. I think Airborne have put a furpy on the wing as they advertise it as i dont think they do it even with the false 3kt +- increase on the airspeed indicator you get with a tall screen on. Cheers Alf
Guest ozzie Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 After the committee meeting on saturday night i can now base the beast at the DZ. I do hope the weather is with me over easter as i'll have the whole place to myself.
Guest ozzie Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I'd get into trouble flying around at ten feet!

Cheers Alf Hehehe Alf, Yep them Thrusters can be hungry beasts!! I've seen exactly what you describe, from both inside the cockpit and as a spectator on the side of the runway - both heart racing events:oh yeah: It sure is a satisfying achievement though when you have the landings down well enough for the instructor to get out. Low and slow is good, but boring if you are trying to go somewhere with a headwind. Still the object for me is the thrill and all round good feeling I get from just being in the air "stooging" around. Cheers, Pud
fly_tornado Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 maybe you need to read this month's sportaviation... http://www.sportaviationonline.org/sportaviation/201104#pg32
Guest ozzie Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I have always wanted to try PPG but i can't run that fast on take off with all that weight on flat ground. The electric versions (Yuneec) are starting to become popular. The petrol versions tend to send you deaf.
J170 Owner Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 You should try 250kts at 1500 feet, that is pretty scary! I often throttle back to 70kts with half flaps when I cruise along the Murray a 1000 feet in the Jab. Apart from the odd pelican scare, it's pretty nice flying....
Guest ozzie Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 PA31 down Stockton Beach is about the fastest at zip height for me, 230kts or so.
Guest Rallytoyota Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 If you want to have a go at a PPC {Powered Parachute} rather than a PPG. You don't have to run you just sit in the seat with your passenger give it some thtottle , pop the chute and fly off!! I have an Aerochute and you won't get better if you want low and slow.

Played with one back in the eighties. I think it was called a 'six shuter' it had swivel wheels and a Cyhuna engine. barrel of laughs. They have come a long way since then. Only time i've seen one up close since was at Airventure in 08. I'll have a go in one when i go back this year if i get out of bed early enough. (another problem these days.) How long before an electric one comes along? Another low and slow type i'd like to have a go at is the 'Cloud Hopper" single seaat balloon.
