Has anyone installed a external battery plug in order to jump start J250?

I have just joined the site and have found a world of information. I am located in the state of Alabama in good old USA. Purchased a J250. I also fly and own a Breezy.

saw One of those being built at West Maitland many years ago.. There is virtually no horizon reference in front of you. I guess it would be a unique experience. From what I recall they are like what you build up after crashing your Tripacer.

Regarding the external power connection, on Jabiru, they are certainly difficult to "jump start", otherwise. The things to consider is the weight of the wire and plug and the fact that there is unprotected "live" wiring around ....Nev

Breezy

Thanks for the info. The Breezy has a O-290D engine 130HP

Terry,The Breezy looks like a load of fun. I saw a Breezy at the Evans Head flyin in the state of NSW in 2010. Has yours got the 0-200 engine?

In relation to the battery connection for jump starting you need to exercise great care in the installation.

I would strongly suggest that you use an isolator at the battery so that the cables are only live when you need to jump start.

Consider carefully the mechanical protection of such cables as any damage when they are live can be catastrophic.

Consider the impact of vibration and heat on the cables (minimum double insulation, better with additional protection).

Consider the cable weight, copper is heavy and you need large gauge.

Keep the cable as short as possible to minimize voltage drop.

Do not place the plug connection or the cable installation where it can be damaged in a minor impact such as a nose wheel collapse (not an issue if it is isolated).

Just a few pointers.

Suggest you do a search on this issue in the Posts section of this site because I believe the need to jump start can be eliminated with certain fixes on the hard starting issues with the Jabiru.

Freekin heck......130hp. that thing should climb vertical....

Serious though, it sure looks like you can have some serious fun on that.

Welcome to the site.

Cheers Davo.

Stone the crows!! I can see why it is called a Breezy, with that power plant it should be called a Huricane.

I would fit a head restraint on top of the seat to prevent serious whip lash when you hit the throttle.

I bet you find your J230 a bit meek and mild in comparison.008_roflmao.gif.692a1fa1bc264885482c2a384583e343.gif

Hi there,

I fitted an external plug to my Rans, (mine is VH exp) used an automotive one for around $40 just incase I needed a jump start on the beach or wherever. I hear the Jab's could be difficult so fully recommend it. If you PM me, I can send some pic's but most auto-electric's places should know what you require. (about 3"x2"x2" thick - both ends come with it, so have the male end configured for the jumper leads and leave rolled up in baggage area or wherever)

You can buy flexible hard plastic conduit for automotive use and I would certainly double insulate using this stuff as the outer protection (did this on a racing car with the battery in the boot). Also a large capacity fuse or circuit breaker next to the isolator at the battery end of the jumper cable (if the cable is only for recharging the battery) will stop the battery from exploding if there is a short circuit. .....

cheers

To clarify, 'cos I don't think I clearly explained myself ..... the earth side cable can be earthed close to the external plug and doesn't need double insulation ...... saves weight ..... However the Live cable MUST be double insulated from any possible contact with the chassis or the other cable and should be the cable with the fuse and the isolator ......

cheers RD
