G'day folks.

The village has lost its idiot again.

I have a "Desire" but it is 2.1.

I tried to wait before putting too many apps on as I wanted to upgrade. Alas that didn't happen and the phone is pretty full.

I have an 8 Gig sd card in it, but ofcourse with 2.1 that doesn't mean much.

So, I don't think I have enough free memory to do the install. There is a stated minimum needed.

To get around this, this is what I am thinking:

Write down - yeah, with a pen and paper, all the apps I have installed.

Uninstall them - well as many as needed to get the minimum free memory - then do the upgrade.

I'll write down all the apps so if anything happens and the phone's memory is wiped, I know what I had.

That should work - right?

I shall start looking but:

Where do I see how much memory is free I'm the phone

How much does the update need

How do I invoke it

For HTC storage...

Go to Menu... SD & Phone Storage

For Software Update...

Go to Menu...

About phone...

Software Information will tell you the Firmware version

To update... System software updates...

And most importantly... KEEP YOUR PHONE AWAY FROM WATER

Ok, that's weird.

I am 2.1-update 1

I click on that and it says "Your phone is up to date"

"there are no updates available for your phone".

Huh?

Just spoke to another person (on Telstra) with a HTC Desire. His is 2.2.

So it is out there and we are allowed to use it.

Now I just gotta work out how.

Just did a quick google search... looks like 2.2 is an update over the 2.1 update1 we have now... Hopefully it is available soon. I believe with the last update it took a short time until it was available downunder.

Well, this peson to whom I just spoke got his new phone.

Turned it on and it said it wanted to update.

It updated and it is now 2.2.

He is here in Oz, he is with Telstra.

Hells bells!

Just went to the HTC site!

3.0 is out!

I've found a bit on how to do it, but they are doing it from a PC and have the file.

But, they don't say from where they got the file.

Seems I can't win.

2.2 has been out since you asked me about it before Christmas and I said I wasn't in a hurry. I updated a couple of months ago, using the network update.

Bought an HTC Desire for my wife a month ago. It already had 2.2 on it.

Make sure you have 25MB free memory. Don't know if it checks first, but it could brick the phone if it doesn't and the update fails.

To backup applications, suggest you use an app called AppMonster. Backs up to the SD Card, so you can then delete the app from the phone and re-install it without needing to re-download it.

If you use the PC method to update the phone, it will return the phone to "factory settings" and there will be no data or extra apps left. You will have to restore or re-enter all of it.

David... Seems I am in the same boat with my out of date Android and didn't even realize... And here I was searching for the ability to move apps to the SD card (something the Froyo update allows) and thinking I was just not finding it!

Any one know how to update without the PC if your phone will not update automatically?

Update:

Thursday morning. Sparrow **** time.

I'm still no further in learning how to do it.

settings/SD & Phone storage

49.6 Meg free.

I'd prefere to do it FOTA (Free over the air) as that keeps existing apps.

Shall call HTC later today.

Any updates shall post here.

ITMT, I have learnt I can NOT do it FOTA.

I have to download the file and install it from the PC.

Kinda good, kinda bad.

Not sure where FOTA came from.

Telstra charges you for the download against your quota for the month if you use the 3G network. That is made abundantly clear in their update instructions on their web site.

If you use WiFi access from the phone to download the update, then whatever charges applicable to that access apply, however people usually have a download allowance on a home WiFi access that is large compared to the download, so no extra charges unless you exceed the cap (if any).

There's only two ways to update the Android OS:-

  1. Update over the air (uses either the 3G network or WiFi access) and all data and existing apps are untouched.

  2. Download to the PC and install using HTCsync. Resets phone to factory defaults and all data and extra apps are gone.

There has been some talk of being able to do it by taking the SD Card out and replacing the operating system files, but you need to be really IT technical to do that and have a lot of low level knowledge of how it all works. You can probably Google the methods, but any such approach should be taken as experimental with uncertain outcomes.

Yes...My problem is that the original "over the air" update was on my old phone and I can't find the update now without using the pc and resetting the phone... I believe the original update was a Telstra link ?

Well, it seems I need to download the update to the PC then update it from there.

I have that APPMonster and have backed up the apps.

But as doing the update from the PC is the only way, reading the stuff on HTC's site: Doing it this way WILL wipe all data.

So it begs the question - for me - HOW do I back up all my contacts? And other stuff like messages etc.

Also which file do I get from HTC's site?

There is a version 3 ROM update mentioned.

Also, I have NEVER used HTC SYNC. I use the phone for internet access. So I can't test while on the net.

I plug in the USB cable, select SYNC, run HTC Sync on the PC and it loads. But that is as far as it goes.

The two buttons do nothing.

The phone complains it can't connect to the PC.

So what am I missing?
