flying dog Posted April 6, 2011 Share Posted April 6, 2011 G'day folks. The village has lost its idiot again. I have a "Desire" but it is 2.1. I tried to wait before putting too many apps on as I wanted to upgrade. Alas that didn't happen and the phone is pretty full. I have an 8 Gig sd card in it, but ofcourse with 2.1 that doesn't mean much. So, I don't think I have enough free memory to do the install. There is a stated minimum needed. To get around this, this is what I am thinking: Write down - yeah, with a pen and paper, all the apps I have installed. Uninstall them - well as many as needed to get the minimum free memory - then do the upgrade. I'll write down all the apps so if anything happens and the phone's memory is wiped, I know what I had. Software Information will tell you the Firmware version To update... System software updates... And most importantly... I've found a bit on how to do it, but they are doing it from a PC and have the file. But, they don't say from where they got the file. Seems I can't win. I updated a couple of months ago, using the network update. Bought an HTC Desire for my wife a month ago. It already had 2.2 on it. Make sure you have 25MB free memory. Don't know if it checks first, but it could brick the phone if it doesn't and the update fails. To backup applications, suggest you use an app called AppMonster. Backs up to the SD Card, so you can then delete the app from the phone and re-install it without needing to re-download it. If you use the PC method to update the phone, it will return the phone to "factory settings" and there will be no data or extra apps left. You will have to restore or re-enter all of it. And here I was searching for the ability to move apps to the SD card (something the Froyo update allows) and thinking I was just not finding it! I'm still no further in learning how to do it. settings/SD & Phone storage 49.6 Meg free. I'd prefere to do it FOTA (Free over the air) as that keeps existing apps. Shall call HTC later today. That is made abundantly clear in their update instructions on their web site. If you use WiFi access from the phone to download the update, then whatever charges applicable to that access apply, however people usually have a download allowance on a home WiFi access that is large compared to the download, so no extra charges unless you exceed the cap (if any). There's only two ways to update the Android OS:- Update over the air (uses either the 3G network or WiFi access) and all data and existing apps are untouched. Download to the PC and install using HTCsync. Resets phone to factory defaults and all data and extra apps are gone. There has been some talk of being able to do it by taking the SD Card out and replacing the operating system files, but you need to be really IT technical to do that and have a lot of low level knowledge of how it all works. flying dog Posted April 7, 2011 Author Share Posted April 7, 2011 Well, it seems I need to download the update to the PC then update it from there. I have that APPMonster and have backed up the apps. But as doing the update from the PC is the only way, reading the stuff on HTC's site: Doing it this way WILL wipe all data. So it begs the question - for me - HOW do I back up all my contacts? And other stuff like messages etc. Also which file do I get from HTC's site? There is a version 3 ROM update mentioned. Also, I have NEVER used HTC SYNC. I use the phone for internet access. So I can't test while on the net. I plug in the USB cable, select SYNC, run HTC Sync on the PC and it loads. But that is as far as it goes. The two buttons do nothing.
