Guest ozzie Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 The ring tail ultralight designed by Mark Stull some thing a bit different.
Guest ozzie Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 The whole ring pivoted on a universal. bit of a failure according to the builder. quite a long thread on it here. http://www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forums/light-stuff-area/9013-ring-tail.html

Deskpilot Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 OK guys, let get to the facts. Mark Stull is a very experienced experimentalist and his Ring tail is not only different, but is very safe to fly and the ring tail works perfectly. I have been in touch with him quite a lot since his early design work so I know all the problem he had. He persisted and was rewarded with success and a full writeup in an American magazine after he took the plane to Sun'n'Fun, their equivalent to our Temora. His plane survived the tornado that hit the show and can be seen flying on youtube. Do yourselves a favor and visit his thread. READ IT ALL and see what 'Grass Roots Flying' is all about. Don't knock anyone or their dreams just because it's not what you would do. Ozzie, thanks for standing up.
farri Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I would never try to destroy someone dreams! It was my dream that got me flying!!! I`m all for inovation and improvement! Just not a big fan of change for the sake of change!!! Frank.

This is similar to our real grass roots ANO 95:10 issue one. You can build whatever drag it out into the paddock try it out, without having to present paperwork get it signed off blah blah you know the drill. This allows Mark and his mates to do their thing, how they wish it to be done. Not having to pay someone to sign it off, pay to register it etc allows more funds in the kitty to play with. This sort of set up allows many of the strange but functional types we see coming out of the US,. it's not classified as an aircraft but as a recreational vehicle. This is true grass roots. Wonder what he will turn out next?
Deskpilot Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 He's been thinking about a Ring-Wing-thing (my description) but it probably won't happen due to the weight and extremely long legs it'll need to keep the wings off the ground.
facthunter Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Experiment and innovation must continue or we get nowhere. Some projects though, are just working through failed concepts, or re-inventing the wheel. ( Not suggesting this one is). Some of the time and effort is misdirected then and that is a pity. The more research the better and define your aims and assess your resources before you start. Life is not long enough to waste a lot of time. Nev
