fly_tornado Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I like the name, as far as using the mag to recruit new pilots its a definite winner! RAA needs to shake off the "uncle ted in his shed" image
Girl Fox and a Bat Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 The board came up with the name, after making a choice from over two hundred....
Kenchhidu Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Let's call it 'Pacific Flyer'. They have the same stories (and ad's) anyway.
turboplanner Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 CFI, that's what you would call a member of SAAA
Guernsey Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 The board came up with the name, after making a choice from over two hundred.... Where did the over two hundred names come from. Alan.
Girl Fox and a Bat Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Where did the over two hundred names come from.Alan. Ummmm, the board?
Kenchhidu Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Ummmm, the board? I'll leave that one. I sure there's enough other threads saying exactly what people think of 'the board'.
Girl Fox and a Bat Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I agree the members should have taken a vote on the name; I just wanted to point out that Sport Pilot was not chosen by the publisher, but by a board vote. The advertising came over from Zebra - they're the same ads as have been in the last few editions, as most advertisers are on a contract.
Guest davidh10 Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 where did they get 'Sport Pilot' from???...dont reckon I'd call myself that!.."Hooked on Flying" perhaps!! I rather like "Hooked on Flying". It's modern and is unashamedly a simple observation about why you would buy it. "Sport Pilot" sounds like something associated with red bovines...with wings.
Guernsey Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I like the name, as far as using the mag to recruit new pilots its a definite winner! RAA needs to shake off the "uncle ted in his shed" image I see your point, but I suppose it is what you conjure up in your mind when you see the word'recreation'. Just up the road from us is a huge building called a 'Recreation Centre' it caters for many indoor activities and sports and is is dominated by young people. There arn't many 'Uncle Teds' in this shed. I suppose we could apply the reverse and say that Sport Pilot could deter some of us 'Uncle Ted' types thinking it was to do with sporty, aerobatic, pylon racing type flying. Perhaps we could combine the two and call it 'Recreation and Sport Pilot' Alan Marriette.
fly_tornado Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 if we where interested in truth in advertising "retired pilot and pensioner magazine" would probably be more apt. One of the RAA's role is to promote the adoption of flying, I consider it a sport more than a hobby so I am happy.
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Here in SA I can only read these posts and hope the mail man delivers soon! but luckily 4WD Action came today along with it's DVD so that's enough to keep me occupied and out of trouble for at least 24 hours.
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 gotta remember Brett that SA is 30mins behind Tassie (well most of Oz actually)...I coulda told u who won the last race at the greys...would have made a fortune...Oh well...next time! I've only ever spent two weeks in Tassie and i absolutely loved it. Found the people friendly, always willing to have a chat. Shop owners showed customer service that is very rare. and the free oysters at Carlton River.. mmmmmmmmm yummy. cant wait to visit again!
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 i lived in Adelaide for a couple of years.....if you had to live in a Capital city, Adelaide is the one!Back on topic....any other suggestions for a mag title?? How about "Richi Rich PlayBoys Who Have Far Too Much Money And Spend It On Their Expensive Flying Machine Toys". That way the Mag would be named after how the general public see's flyers.
pete8862 Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 do'nt the yanks call our type of aircraft sport planes
Admin Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 The board came up with the name, after making a choice from over two hundred.... Sport Pilot was started by Rod Birrell (Vic Member) and then supported by Lynn Jarvis (SA Member)...it was then put to the board in an unofficial vote on 3 options: Sport Pilot Sport Aviation Sport Aviator My response to that was: Personally I don't like the name "Sport" as I asked a couple of non-aviation interested people and they said Sport to them means competition...I then asked them with what you know about aviation would you think is Sport in aviation...the 4 of them said the Red Bull Race. The other reason I don't like Sport is that we have suffered by other aviation communities by using the name Recreational, we are now stepping on the toes of SAAA and I fear there will be a backlash to it. If we are trying to attract people into RAAus we need to consider that these type of people would not know the difference between the words Ultralight and Recreational or Sport and MTOW 600kg. However whilst we can always change the mag name down the track, we are hampered by time so my vote out of the 3 would reluctantly be "Sport Pilot" But Note: the domain name of sportpilot.com.au is owned by Tyson i.e. Sky Shop so some commercialisation of our name may take place unless we can convince him to give the name to us as there currently isn't any live site on that domain. Details are: Domain Name: sportpilot.com.au Last Modified: 21-Oct-2010 01:17:11 UTC Registrar ID: Domain Central Registrar Name: Domain Central Status: ok Registrant: TYSON, DEBBIE Registrant ID: ABN 97527857081 Eligibility Type: Sole Trader Registrant Contact ID: C02292-DC Registrant Contact Name: Debbie Tyson Registrant Contact Email: Visit whois.ausregistry.com.au for Web based WhoIs Tech Contact ID: C02292-DC Tech Contact Name: Debbie Tyson Tech Contact Email: Visit whois.ausregistry.com.au for Web based WhoIs Name Server: dns1.domaincentral.net.au Name Server IP: 202.174.84.209 Name Server: dns2.domaincentral.net.au Name Server IP: 202.174.84.210 I then sent an email to everyone on the board that I post in here for some suggestions from you people but I got the felling that was frowned upon. It then changed to a bigger official poll containing: Sport Pilot Sport Aviation Sport Aviator Pleasure Pilot Pleasure Flyer Pleasure Aviator Leisure Pilot Leisure Flyer Leisure Aviator Freedom Pilot Freedom Flyer Freedom Aviator Sport Flying Light Aircraft and Pilots Aircraft Pilots Limited Altitude Pilot Sport Flyer Because I didn't like any of them, "Freedom" has a connection to the President's business, Sport has a connection to the SAAA, etc I didn't vote and my vote would not have changed the outcome as I also didn't like any of the names that already had votes with Sport Pilot in the lead but the results were: Sport Pilot - 5 votes Freedom Flyer - 2 votes Leisure Aviator - 2 votes Pleasure Aviator - 1 vote I personally think it would have been much better to have put it our here even for just 48hrs to get a general feeling from many members...which is what I tried to do but ignored
Kenchhidu Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 What's wrong with the word Recreational? Obviously it can't be 'Recreational Flying' but what about 'Recreational Pilot'?
HEON Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I personally do not care what it is called. What I very much care about is the timely distribution to the members and the Newsagents for sale to allow; 1. Members HOPEFULLY to get TIMELY information from the organisation, 2.Non members to read about the wounderful area of "pleasure/sport/etc" aviation, 3.Suppliers such as myself get value for money for the adds we buy to promote our products. I also include the Members Market here. I wrote to RA Aus about this early in the year and was pleased that the problems of the previous seemed to be being addressed. I was even prepared to put up with a month "transition" due to poor management BUT NO MORE NEWSFLASH: RA Aus you have failed! No copy myself; no copies in newsagent! The EARLIST will now be 13 June...THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH 1
DarkSarcasm Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I like the new format and name far better, it makes the organisation seem a lot more vibrant and interesting and the simple large name is easier to see and remember. Overall the cover at least is a LOT less daggy than the old version, it's something that might make other people on the train think 'that looks like an interesting magazine'. The articles were a lot more interesting than usual too in my opinion, I haven't read the mag for the past few months because I was getting tired of endless stories of 'we went here, we went there' etc which can get a bit repetitive, I liked the inclusion of articles such as how to photograph your aircraft.
moz Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 For me I'm not too worried about the title. I think what needs to be addressed is: The issue of on-time delivery Content - stuff that is useful in helping us be better pilots, and may entice new members.
fly_tornado Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 The idea behind the "sport pilot" name is to latch onto the global standard the FAA and EAA have created, so when someone googles "sport pilot" they get a heap of information, most of which is published by the EAA so it costs us nothing and of a better quality than what the RAA can afford to publish. Its one of the benefits of globalisation, affordability.
sain Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 isn't there already a mag in the states called Sports Pilot? Trademark infringement suit in 5...4...3...
