Guest Jake.f Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Hey all, recently went for a short scenic flight around the Coffs area with my dad and uncle in a Piper Cherokee. Took quite a few photos (You can do this easily when you aren't the pilot flying) and here some of them are for anyone interested: The Foxbat waiting patiently for a Cessna to land: Lined up on Runway 28 Rolling And liftoff, using about 80% of the runway! On base leg for Runway 10 Turning Final On Final Thanks for looking, some more photos can bee seen on my Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jake_f/
Guest Andys@coffs Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Hmm not taken this weekend then....VFR here would be Very Fri&en Rainny..... Photos are good, almost show the Coffs area as being as beautiful as it really is. Recently flew over the lighhouse and the island between it and woopi headland, thats pretty spectacular Ive never taken off or landed on the E-W runway at Coffs yet, Its not long enough for the RPT's nor I imagine would they like the westward terrain
Guest Jake.f Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Yes conditions this weekend would be utterly terrible! Rain with a lot of wind!! I would like to fly out over the islands one time, that would be fun. The east west runway is certainly not for RPT ops!! I doubt a 737/E190/E170 or Q400 could land on it safely, however it is the same length as the runway on Lord Howe Island so a Q200 could if need be.... I'm surprised you have never used the E/W runway, usually it is the most common one to use for light aircraft.

Guest Maj Millard Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Thanks for sharing the photos Jake. I flew past Coffs last year on my way down to the Hunter Valley. I was sneaking through the hills to the West to stay out of the control zone (which wasn't bad ) . Coming back a couple of days later, the tower was inactive, so with the appropriate radio calls I flew right over the top back to South Grafton. That sure is a great part of the East coast to fly when the weather is great. Viewing your photos gave me a bit more of an understanding of the airport for next time................Cheers, Maj...
Tomo Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Nice Photos! Flew down that way about a month ago from the Gold Coast. Certainly on the cards to go down there again sometime soon and have a proper look around.
Guest Maj Millard Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Jake...I didn't seem to be too far from the airport...just out there in those low hills and valleys at 1000-1500 ft as I recall, to stay legal. I had departed South Grafton after overnighting there, and yes only traffic that morning was a Qlink Dash8....All good fun in the lovely morning air !...................................Maj...
Tomo Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Yes it would be nice if you could do CTR in RAA... After doing it in GA, you kind of just take it for granted! And it's so easy! Just get clearance and do what you're told! Can't be much simpler than that! Need transponder obviously.
Guest Jake.f Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 It should became an endorsement I think, it really is not that hard.

That said, we have about 15 RPT's a day enter and leave, ranging from small through to 737 (rarely now that Embraier 170's and 190's available), so whether optional or not may still be a good idea. Still as someone who avoids CTA I may well be full of it...so to speak Jake, does the foxbat, or the club jabbys, have a transponder fitted? Andy
Tomo Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Hmm I thought for Coffs (class D) a transponder was optional. Yes flight into Class D a transponder isn't mandatory, but I guess I like to know the fact that others can see me when in those environments. However you must have a clearance and VHF com with ATS. Obviously if you have a transponder, it must be on 3000 and on ALT, which requires it to be ALT encoded or whatever they call it.

Owi Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Nice pics, mate. Pity the wings are in the way of a better view Obviously, the Foxbat would've been a better plane for taking pics of that kind of scenery.

Yes low wing aircraft are not great for taking photos... There used to be a Cessna 210 doing scenic flights and the like out of Coffs but it wasn't profitable or worth it anymore so the owner took the plane up north somewhere.
Aussie Steve Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Nice photos Jake. Thanks for posting them. I have wondered what the Areodrome looks like. I plan to fly through there on my way to Ballina one day. There is a web site run by a fellow Bathurst Aero Club member that would love to get some pics of the aerodrome and also your one on Final to put in his collection. http://www.serverside.com.au/AirfieldService Cheers
