Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Recently flew JetStar from Adelaide to Sydney, and came across a Flight Attendant, of Asian descent. The poor girl had trouble making herself clearly understood on the PA, and in fact I had trouble (as did my fellow fliers) understanding her announcements at all. Now I must qualify this - i'm not racist, my wife is Chinese, and I even have trouble understanding her sometimes (*waits for the jokes*). But anyway, my point is - from a safety point of view - the announcements were quite impossible to decipher. It may have been because she was stressed (a Pax had taken her bag by mistake) but regardless, I didnt feel it was very good. I wonder if this ties in with the various rumors and comments about JetStar etc hiring cheap overseas labour? Any comments would be appreciated!
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 ...and we wont mention driving home 1400km in a rental car because Virgin cancelled our flight home due to the Ash Cloud. I mentioned to my travelling companions the old line about "better to be down here wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here". Then of course they made many jokes about me checking the bolts on the car, doing a pre flight check of the vehicle before moving off. So it was a great trip - everytime we got back in after a stop I wouldnt move off until they responded to my "hatches and harnesses secure" line, "fuel sufficient" etc
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Thanks for your comments cficare, have you had any similar experience? And my wife does agree with you re: getting my ears checked. Something to do with me not hearing things like "dishes" and "washing" and "cleaning" but being quite ok with "dinner is served" etc.
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Ahhh good point cficare. I just heard "dishes" but I couldnt be sure so here I sit still....
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 as a young instructor i urgently suggested an overseas student..'raise the nose!!! '...he did ......the a/c didn't!! ROFL!!!
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 I beleive "dishes" are the plates my wife serves me dinner on each nite. Then again i've been wrong before - just ask my ex's
winsor68 Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Dinner... that was an old tradition whereby families used to sit down and have a meal together in western society... largely replaced these days by a life lived on the run.
Guest SAJabiruflyer Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 I used to be like that - no time to eat - at work all day and late at nite - 7 days a week. Now I take weekends off, and home usually by 630pm. Sure, I took an income cut by hiring staff, but my time off to spend with family and friends is more important to me than the $$$ i'm missing :)
Ultralights Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 She probably doesnt have to meet CASA's qualifications in English, as she is employed by a singaporean company called Jetstar on a Singaporean contract paid in Singapore $$. welcome to Qantasia, the Spirit of Malaysia, we only call Australia home for marketing purposes.
Guest davidh10 Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 On the news tonight there was a story about some report, critical of flight safety in Australia and highlighting the standard of English as one issue.
fly_tornado Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 jetstar employ thai stewards, costs qantas about $300 a week
winsor68 Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Aussie airline wages (unless you are a Pilot and even then!) are down right insulting... and they have the gall to try to get it for a tenth of that overseas!!! So which single airline in Australia still uses Australian staff for its Australian services...?

Perhaps Rex? But then all the profits head straight to Singapore!
