Spin Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 They don't miss a trick, apparently last night's flight out of Johannesburg had to turn back after #3 engine failure on a 747. Of course the Twits or tweeting classes immediately had the word out that an A380 engine "exploded on take off" and everyone "survived an emergency landing" - situation all the more dramatic for the fact that the Springbok rugby team were aboard:yikes:. Probably did not help that the ABC doco on the A380 incident was broadcast there within the last month.......
Guest Jake.f Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Is there any news reports of it yet? I find it funny reading passengers comments on those. One that comes to mind is when V Australia aborted a takeoff in LA due to engine issues, the report said "We heard the landing gear come back down and dropped back onto the runway" - I didn't know that the runway in LA was like 10km long for that to be possible?

Guest Jake.f Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Sounds like the second report was written with references entirely from twitter, there is a lot of difference between an engine "exploding in a ball of flames" and an in-flight shutdown.
Spin Posted July 16, 2011 Author Posted July 16, 2011 Interesting view on things from an apparent industry insider - copied across from the superannuated plum.... "Blades from the High Pressure Compressor stage 6 keep failing at the root. Once they let go, massive damage is caused as the part flies through the rest of the compressor and then the turbine hence all the sparks and heat. Qantas keep refering to this as an overheated engine that is shut down as a "precautionary measure". Of course they also say it is not a safety issue. This aircraft, OJL had a similar failure on Eng 4 in BKK a month ago. The good news is that there is a known fix to this problem by way of modification. The bad news (for Qantas) is that they can't carry out the modification becasue they closed their Roller engine shop last year. The Asian shops they use now are all booked out so the mod is not being done until an engine comes off for routine service. I'd be expecting a few more of these failures. I think this is about the 10th one."
Bryon Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Love the photo on Sport24 Isnt that the A380 engine??
