A SEARCH is under way for two men missing after their ultralight plane failed to return to Emerald airport last night.

The men, believed to be locals, took off from the airport at 3pm and were reporting missing at 6pm.

A night search was conducted but failed to find any trace of the ultralight, which was believed to have been on a pre-sale flight.

No EPIRB signal has been detected from the craft.

The Mackay-based RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter was tasked to Emerald last night with the crew departing Mackay Airport at 10pm.

They were sent by AUSSAR in Canberra to search for an over-due light plane.

Crew on board the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter remained in Emerald overnight and resumed their search at first light this morning. A relief crew from Mackay is flying to Emerald this morning to allow RACQ CQ RESCUE to continue searching today.

The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter is one of several aircraft involved in the search.

A Cairns-based fixed wing aircraft has also been deployed to Emerald.

Dear members and friends

It is with deep regret that I advise that Rob Behrend, CFI Warwick Flying School, our friend and instructor for many of us passed away yesterday in a plane accident near Emerald Qld. Rob and the person he was training (in a Veri-Ezy) were found today at 2.00pm. A full investigation is underway.

Sincerest condelscence to all family and friends.
