Guest davidh10 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Think I'm happy with a land trike. One of our new forumites in the last 6 months was looking at buying one of these. Can't recall who it was though of the name of the trike. I didn't think at the time it looked very stable, despite the marketing. That boat is big and can catch a lot of wind. Of course they aren't meant to land cross-wind.
J170 Owner Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 It seemed to me that he was going too fast at touch down but hell, what would I know...
Guest davidh10 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 how do you land a trike in a crosswind? Ok. As I'm not an instructor, I'll give a general description, only, to satisfy curiosity. Up to about 7kn, you can come in on the runway bearing, but just slightly offset, to the lee side of the runway and just crab and pull straight as the main gear touches. Wind much above this speed will have you at too great an angle if crabbing. In that case the runway is approached from an into the wind direction. ie, turn final from downwind with no base leg. From this approach angle the trike has to be "flown-on" with a turn onto runway heading very late in the flare. I'm deliberately not providing specifics, as I don't want this post used as a "how to". Anyone needing to learn, go to an instructor. The strongest cross wind I've landed in was 20G25kn at 30 degrees to runway. The whole manoeuvre is a precision one, and messing it up could end badly. It is something that once learned, needs practice to maintain the skill. With wind at these velocities, ground handling is rather tricky too and a gust can easily roll the trike if it gets under the wing. I know it is possible to land safely in higher cross winds, but it gets very hairy and personally, I'd be trying to avoid the need.
Guest ozzie Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Hmm don't land at a speed where the boat is on the 'plane'.
farri Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Watched the Vid and I know it`s serious but I couldn`t help laughing !......It reminded me of the time I sailed 16 feet hobie catamarans!...Going R-Sup was great fun!!! Frank.

Wow! That's going back a few years although I can also remember going on a friend's Hobie and the thrill of standing on the upper hull as we sped past Noah's Ark. Alan.

The Whitsunday Passage can be a lonely place at times Off topic but.........Belting along at a great rate of knots, one day....Pretty rough sea.....Nose dug in and for a moment we were way up in the air, only a moment though, as gravity took over and down we went, off the trampoline, with cat on top. Another day, got half way to the Islands, went R-Sup, mast and sail sunk, ( Had taken the float off the top of the mast, to try and get more speed ) couldn`t get it back up!....Was indeed a lonly place for a while!!!!! Yeah, great fun!.... would do it still! Frank ...........................................
