winsor68 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Do you reckon these engines would be a possibility for Aviation conversion... say for a 95.10 aircraft... say something like a 95.10 Sapphire? http://subarupower.com/pspecsheet.aspx?pid=225 I know many years ago Subaru/Robin engines were used in Ultralights.
Guernsey Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 The 28hp model could possibly suit 95:10 aircraft that performed satisfactorily with a Rotax 277 , the Winton Swing Wing for example, however there are very few 95:10 aircraft around and the Sapphire was better equiped with the Rotax 447. Alan.

There seems to be a fair number still around... and as a build project 95.10 seems like the perfect category... the problem seems to be the lack of Rotax 447 engines left in circulation with no real alternative.
Guest ozzie Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 The Backyard Flyer uses a similar generic V twin. It performed well and sounded great. http://www.culverprops.com/big-twin.php
winsor68 Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 Thanks for that Ozzie... That Valley Engineering engine looks great... All the hard work done and a good price.
winsor68 Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 Seems to pull this 80% replica DH2 along ok... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qeI_eeJOHs
fly_tornado Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 flying 5 knots above your stall speed will only work for a while. you want power and lots of it!
Guernsey Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 you aren't going to get too far on 28hp! At the end of the video the specs stated that the engine was 40 hp. I like it and at that kit price we could start a squadron of them. Bring on the 95:10:thumb_up: Alan (squadron leader) Marriette. 1
Guest ozzie Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 you want power and lots of it! cracks me up
winsor68 Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Hey... don't give FT a hard time... You gotta keep in mind... He is leaving for Reno in the morning... Dude is a rev head and likes really, really fast planes! lol
Guest ozzie Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Yep mate sure does ... what does the Lazair have ? Isn't it between 10 and 16 HP .David 11 total maybe on a really good day early in the morning. I had an early single seat Thruster with a 277 on it. Required a gentle touch. But it went as far if not further than a Thruster with a 503.
Guernsey Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 My Winton Swing Wing also had a Rotax 277 and did 50 kts at 5,000revs, 55 kts at 5,500 revs and 60 kts at 6,000 revs. This aircraft is still performing well with it's present owner at Renmark, SA. Alan Marriette.
Litespeed Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 What about a engine designed for a aircraft instead of a mower? How about the Verner JCV360- flat twin, watercooled, redrive, very light and good power http://www.vernermotor.com/index.asp?sec=42&gal=photo110404 The cost is about the same as a converted mower from the states. Approx $5000. I just think it has to be a better prospect for reliability.
