Guest ozzie Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 News report of a light aircraft calling mayday and ditching off Curl Curl Beach (Nth Sydney) at 10am this morning. Reported 2 POB, one being treated for spinal injuries. No mention of 2nd person. Police divers on aircraft now.
Kyle Communications Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Just watched live coverage of them getting a guy off the rocks and treating him for possible "spinal" injuries then loading him into the rescue heli going to the hospital so looks like at least 1 survivor anyway. Hope thats all that was on the aircraft
Spin Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Watching on CH 7 atm, Victor 1? Appears to be a low wing single, selfishly I hope it is a GA type otherwise the media will be all over the "ultralight, experimental" angle again. edit: There seems to be a possibility of someone still in the wreckage - really hope not:crying:
Spin Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 You're right David, it doesn't look very big. I believe the mayday call can be heard on the liveatc archive - would answer the question I guess, not sure that I want to listen just yet though.
Spin Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Poster on the elderly plum calling it a Lightwing and quoting an RA rego.
Mazda Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Has anyone listened on live ATC? If I knew how to do it I'd go in there. I believe you can see it on WebTrak at 10.10 (according to PPRuNe).
winsor68 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 FxxK!!! Lightwing 4040 sounded like... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Foto_Flyer Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Lightwing 5040. Not good. Mayday call at 10:12 am local.
winsor68 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Sorry... 5040... David. http://www.liveatc.net/listen.php Mayday call is on LiveATC Australian satellite at 12 minutes into 0000-0030Z archive.
turboplanner Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Don't release the name if you get it - remember the family comes first. 1
Tomo Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Arrgh! Listening to ATC I did find it comforting how fast things were put to order and other aircraft changed their plans to help locate the aircraft.
turboplanner Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Turnback and Spiral witness report on Channel 9.
Downunder Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 The "graphic" shown on this news report looks like he tried to make the beach but couldn't get over the ridge. http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/10172180/rescuers-tell-of-bid-to-save-crash-pilot/ (second vid) Apparently went in at 45 degrees from witnesses.
Bryon Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 So sad, my condolences to the pilots family and I wish the pax a speedy recovery.
Gnarly Gnu Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 I hope the survivor makes a full recovery. My sympathies to the pilots family also. The aircraft looks quite intact which would appear to perhaps contradict the '45 degree angle impact with speed'. May not be relevant here but it is my belief that many light aircraft lack head protection for the occupants.
turboplanner Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Looked smashed up in the Channel 9 video GG, but at the tail end they were saying it's out of the water so we'll see.
winsor68 Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Looked to me like the fuselage was rather bent just behind the seats... this is often where the seatbelt attachment points are.
Adrian Lewer Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Don't know what to say, Poor buggars must have been under the pump, I could hear it i his voice he was thinking hard. I think I might devote my next flight to them and practice more PFL's after listening to that, God knows we all need it. To the family from myself and my family our best wishes are with you.
martinj5880 Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Any further reports on why the motor stopped?
Virago Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 I think the retrieval crews may have damaged it getting it out of the water. Earlier footage showed the aircraft substantially intact while submerged but all they dragged out was steel framework with the engine in it. BTW, the engine looked like a Rotax 100 ULS (judging by the colour of the rocker covers)
winsor68 Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Footage of the aircraft under water showed the fuselage bent behind the cockpit... looked like about 30degrees. Damage before they removed the airframe from the water looked fairly significant to me. Certainly enough damage to have rendered the occupants unable to get themselves out of the wreckage. Off course it is hard to be certain of anything without being there.
