Bubbleboy
Thought I would kick this one off. Im building a Pietenpol Air Camper with a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair auto engine. The Corvair was used through the 1960's and is a horizontally opposed 6 cylinder air cooled auto engine. William Wynne in the USA has spent many years developing parts and techniques to convert these auto engines for aircraft use with great results. B H Pietenpol started using the Corvair engines in his home builds when they were introduced rather than the Model A Fords. There is a lot of good advice on the web about what you can incorporate into your Corvair build to attain the most reliability. For the standard conversion you are looking at 100HP turning a prop at around 3000RPM. The Corvair is a direct drive off the crank. I believe that a fully built up Corvair aero conversion with a fifth bearing will be around $7000. It could be cheaper or more expensive depending on what options you choose. I try to keep my website as up to date as time allows so you can follow my build. Feel free to ask any questions Scotty

Wish it was but that is what it is going to look like. This example belongs to a fellow builder in the USA. Scotty

Wayne T Mathews
Heck Scott, I wasn't talking about the picture of the assembled aircraft. I was talking about what you've managed to do so far with the ribs, the empernage, the wheels, the engine et al.... Well done Mate... I love what you've done with your website too... What do I have to do to get you to teach me how to do something like that? Please don't tell me it's just another thing young Jack does to help his Dad. Keep the sunny side up, Wayne. Bubbleboy
Nice sound? Hi GG...have a look on my home page as there is a You Tube link to the first run of this engine. They are supposed to be one of the smoothest running engines around. Wayne...sorry I thought you were talking about the engine. My engine is in the USA now waiting to have the crank modifications done and an OT10 cam fitted. Once this is done, it will be shipped here and I will assemble the rest of it. I like fiddling with my website as I am learning all the time from it. It started out I got lumped looking after another club website and had to find my around that and eventually had the courage to start my own. Its not flash but it gets the message across I think. I will be ordring the Spruce for the fuselage soon so then it will start to look like a plane! Scotty
StephenL
Hi all... Just joined the group, interested to see how things have panned out Corvair wise. I am interested in using one in a Flitzer project. Stephen
