Guest rogerbarlee Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Sonex crash in Queensland--has anyone heard of a Sonex crash in southern QL in the last 2 weeks--so far I've seen no reports, but I believe it happened???
aj_richo Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Hi Roger, Can't see anything on the ATSB site regarding a Sonex. Looked thorough the investigations and weekly summaries? Richo Building Sonex #813
aj_richo Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 PS Latest incident in QLD was a C182 birdstrike on the 15Oct11.
Guest rogerbarlee Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 FYI what I have heard was that it was on landing on a gravel strip about 800 metres long. The a/c landed down wind with a strong tail wind, over ran the end of the strip, hit a drain , over turned, and the pax was taken to hospital.......???
turboplanner Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 For an RA aircraft the report would not usually involve ATSB, and I would expect to see a little report about the same as yours in Pilot Notes in the Magazine in two or three months. Wonder why he would be landing downwind?
aj_richo Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Tailwind + short strip in a slippery Sonex... wouldn't be good as demonstrated
Guest nunans Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Tailwind + short strip in a slippery Sonex... wouldn't be good as demonstrated is 800m a short strip?
Guest ozzie Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 800mts!! What did he have as a tailwind? Cyclone Ada?
aj_richo Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 is 800m a short strip? Yep.. especially when its behind you
Teckair Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 is 800m a short strip? Certainly with a Sonex with a tailwind. 1
Guest Andys@coffs Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 is 800m a short strip? Isnt the answer to that entirely related to what you are used to dealing with? At Gawler in SA the field used to be a WWII RAAF training field with the main runway seemingly going on forever....For people who operated out of that everything else was short.... Andy Richo, when you and I last spoke in a Strathalbyn pub you were just starting the build...Where are you up to now?
Guest davidh10 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Isnt the answer to that entirely related to what you are used to dealing with? Absolutely. Someone told me they were nervous about landing on our main strip at 17m width of sealed surface. Our dirt strip used to be 6m, so 17 is luxury. Just supports your point, though, Andy.

Have you retired to Coffs? Cheers Richo Richo Looks good and a fair bit done. Coffs is my home stomping ground and my parents were getting to an age where they needed some support so I chose to move back to coffs. My wife is an RN (ex commsop) so can work anywhere. I still work for BAE Systems however I work from home for all of the month but one week when I fly back to Adelaide for the face to face stuff that I have to do. All in all the best of both worlds. Andy
