suggestions for NSW trip January

I am taking the kids camping for two weeks in the Arrow early January from Proserpine to NSW and return, looking at the main aviation mueseums and Dubbo Zoo so far.

 

I would appreciate any ideas of places to visit and or camp away from the coast.

Driven through Coonabarabran and surrounds (eg The Pilliga) a couple of times and always planned to return for a short stay / camp, seems an interesting area.
