Admin Posted December 6, 2011 Author Posted December 6, 2011 Just a note that our new server is now up and running ready for me to start looking at moving the site over to it (when best to)...it has a whopping massive 16gig of ram, 4 stainless steel 15,000rpm hard disks all set up in a RAID10 configuration plus an extra disk for backup and emergencies and 8 processor cores...it is a massive web server that is set up ready for all the extra great features that are coming...all things that you just simply can't do an a normal web server. A standard web server may use "Shared Hosting" which is where many websites/hosting accounts all reside on a single server and they share the ram and processor etc between them all. The next level of web hosting is a "VPS" (Virtual Private Server)...this is where a single server is shared again across different websites/hosting accounts however whilst they still share the overall server's ram and processor, they get a set minimum amount of ram and processor power dedicated just to each...usually around 2gig of ram...a much higher cost option then "Shared Hosting" The ultimate, and the highest cost in web hosting, is the "Dedicated Server"...this is where a complete server, all its ram and all its processor power is given to one single account, no other websites/hosting accounts are on the dedicated server at all, just the one person/account that the entire server is dedicated to (they sort of own the entire server)...this is what we now have. Many of these types of servers are usually around the 4gig of ram however you can spec it to what ever you need...most advanced websites would usually need around 4gig of ram but ours has 16gig. Currently we use a VPS which we have spec'd at 8gig of ram and 4 processor cores. When the site is being hammered, we can use around 5gig of ram. Most of this extra ram is used by the video hosting of the chat room and 1to1 chat plus many of the other features we have here plus all the concurrent users on the site. This new Dedicated Server ups the ram to a whopping 16gig, ALL for us, and double the processor cores from 4 to 8 again ALL for us. Imagine all the great extra features we can now bring you here at Recreational Flying because of this investment we have made on your behalf...so we can provide you with so much more then ever before so I hope you all will find the efforts that are continually being made to provide you with such a valuable aviation resource of great benefit in: - Helping you to fly safer - Helping you to learn more about proper aircraft maintenance - Helping you to learn greater flying skills All in a huge single friendly and helpful environment Thanks!
