Guest davidh10 Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Lovely Tomo; I never tire of looking at the farm field patterns. We get some that vaguely resemble "crop circles", for reasons I often cannot fathom.
shags_j Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Any thoughts on a good aerial photography rig (RC linked to outside of aircraft???) I know about the go pro but was wondering if there was something the professional aerial photographers used. BTW Tommo, That pic of the field patterns is just fantastic.
Tomo Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks for the compliments guys! Appreciated I use Sony cameras... they haven't been edited at all other than down sized. We get some that vaguely resemble "crop circles", for reasons I often cannot fathom. The circle crops are because of a centre pivot irrigation system (basically a big sprinkler that is fixed in the middle and drives around in a circle). When I get the chance I'll find some more photos of them which should show more detail.
Justin Hawkins Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 Justin; I cannot help but notice the clarity of your photos. Very nice indeed. What is your secret to removing the haze that invariably affects aerial photos to some degree? I use DXO Optics Pro to post-process mine and have developed some settings that minimise the effect of haze, but it is subject to introducing some other impairments under certain lighting and scene situations. Thanks for the compliment ! Haze is difficult to deal with. My camera is a Nikon D7000. I try to keep the focal length low to reduce the amount of air between myself and the subject. This of course means using a wide angle lens and getting close (100-400') to the subject. It's important to get a fast focusing camera and lens setup. Also important is keeping the shutter speed high, the ISO low, and the white balance accurate. Some days are simple clearer than others. I use Adobe Lightroom 3 for the little bit of post processing I do. My brother took this photo with my older Sony Alpha a100: 4

The circular irrigators are quite obvious and actually make good landmarks for navigation, but what I was referring to was something like this.
dazza 38 Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I like all your photos Tomo, especially your photos of home, everywhere you look down. There is a airfield underneath you. 1
Gnarly Gnu Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks folks, these photos are nice. Can't open the window in a Jabiru for a clear shot, at least not in a way that the owner wouldn't notice later!
Tomo Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks folks, these photos are nice. Can't open the window in a Jabiru for a clear shot, at least not in a way that the owner wouldn't notice later! Just clean the window up nicely, all the photos above of mine are taken inside an aircraft, except the Feedlot one which was from a Drifter. The top three from a J120; Drifter; J120, and the last two from a Cessna
petetheprinta Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Can anyone point me to the instructions on how to upload piccies, I keep getting an error message, "file to big"?? they are only about 500K. Thanks in advance. 1
skeptic36 Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks Tomo. The circular irrigators are quite obvious and actually make good landmarks for navigation, but what I was referring to was something like this. Hi David, I think you'll find the lines in the canola crops are irrigation channels, they follow the contours to keep them level. Not sure if they are the type to shift water from point a to point b or the type that flood irrigate the paddocks they pass through. Regards Bill
farri Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 This property is just north of Cardwell. I took the shot with my Olympus 790 SW, from the Drifter, not long after cyclone Yasi hit the coast. Frank. 1

Wayne T Mathews Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks Tomo. The circular irrigators are quite obvious and actually make good landmarks for navigation, but what I was referring to was something like this. I might be wrong David, but those fields look like they've been setup along the keyline plan idea. For more info see: http://www.keyline.com.au/
Wayne T Mathews Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I like all your photos Tomo, especially your photos of home, everywhere you look down. There is a airfield underneath you. Hear hear... The Darling Downs... Aren't they just fantastic... A great place for airmen: No traffic, no terrain, no weather, and nowhere more than 5 minutes from somewhere to land... How good is that?
farri Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 How good is that? Almost as good as Deeral! Frank 1
Wayne T Mathews Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Almost as good as Deeral! Frank Deeral? Of course ... No traffic, no terrain, no weather, and nowhere more than 5 minutes from somewhere to land? ... If you say so... 1

Wayne T Mathews Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Some times I wonder what the rich people are doing... But then I think... Argh, who cares?... Nobody's richer than those of us who get to sit around shooting sh*t about little airplanes, eh? 6

Not sure if they are the type to shift water from point a to point b or the type that flood irrigate the paddocks they pass through. Regards Bill That makes sense. Thanks Bill.
