Guest Maj Millard Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Photos of a small 9 cylinder radial engine a friend has made. It runs beautifully, and is based on the 985 Pratt and Whitney as used on the DHC-s Beaver, D-18 Twin Beech, Beechcraft Staggerwing, Winjeel and many others. The original engine uses an integral supercharger mounted on the back of the crank, and so does this one. Took less than a year to do. Every piece including crank, pistons, rings, valves, valve springs, rods, oil pump etc. etc. were made in friends machine shop. A rear case casting and ignition parts were purchased but still had to be machined and assembled. The spark plugs used are the smallest made, and are actual spark plugs not igniters. The propellor was also made from scratch, and is a copy of the 3 blader used on the Beaver, it also changes pitch of course..........Enjoy !!........................................................Maj...
Guernsey Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Wow!!! Do you know its weight and horsepower ? Alan.
farri Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Tinest v12 engine.....http://www.wimp.com/tiniestengine/ Frank. 2
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 The prop is a little less than a meter in dia, weight - you can easily lift it and carry it, horsepower - we haven't worked it out yet. The full size one produces 450 Hp. I'll get some video next time he runs it.It has a separate oil tank, but he is currently using a little oil in the fuel to assist ring wear in (cast iron). I believe it has had an oil change already. Starting is by hand propping only, ignition is adjustable, and small throttle lever is behind support plate...One bottom cylinder threw a bit of oil out the exhaust, and kept fouling the plug until the rings seated.............Maj..
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Biggest problem has been with the carb, the original didn't supply enough fuel. One currently on it is doing the job. My estimate on horsepower would be around 10-12 hp only. I love to hear it run, and stand behind it as it does move some air !....the photo above is of the real thing of course, it moves air also !...........................................................Maj...
Guest Andys@coffs Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Major I was as impressed as all h&ll until I saw the photo shoing the HT lead being held to the intake manifold with <Gasp!> a cable tie....... I wouldnt now stand within a km of it running as death and devistation will surely follow In fact looking at the photos again there looks to be more cable ties in use than is purported to be in a Sierra Andy
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Watching that little Merlin being made is facinating also, thanks Frank..............................................Ross:thumb up:
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 And horrors Andy they are the dreaded white ones also !!!!!............................................Maj....
Guest Andys@coffs Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 And horrors Andy they are the dreaded white ones also !!!!!............................................Maj.... Yeah, but the engine was indoors and unless your friend is growing "funny weed" with UV intense lights to pay for the engineering effort then they should be safe unless heat affected..... Still it was a good thing that the photos didnt show carbie and fuel lines with zip ties (that I could see anyway....not that I know what Im looking for unless its built with semiconductors....) Andy

I counted 14 in all the photos shown in Maj's post - some of the cable ties are shown twice, or more, in the photos. Competition for ya.... How many cable ties do you count in the photos shown in Maj's post? Pud PS. By the way - very impressive engine and I'm hanging out for Maj's video of it running.

The only aeroplane that earns more points than a Beaver is a Beaver on floats! kaz
Guest cficare Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 very nice to fly Kaz....on floats absolutely magic! ...get bloody tired pumping flaps though!
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Cfi, we have hydrylically operated flaps on ours..................................................Maj...
rdarby Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Christmas will be made for the kid that gets that engine bolted onto a kids peddle plane and left under the tree!
Tomo Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Maj, nice engine. When I was doing my machining course at college a guy brought in one of those that he was making. Makes me wonder if it's the same fella actually... anyway as you know my brother makes little engines etc.. and I have a goal to build myself one of these sometime.
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Yes ozzie Reg again. Wouldn't two (or four) go well on a lazair ! Tomo Doubt if it's the same guy. This fulla has been a master machinist for many years and the speed that he produces these marvels is beyond me......................................................................Maj...
Guest ozzie Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Ahh Reg, a man of many talents. Two would be fun but a bit pricey these would have to be worth 10 grand or so. Video of it running coming soon? The Lazair now has a 10 grand budget for "E' conversion. Next winter probably when Dale has finished his testing. :)
Guest Maj Millard Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Yes the little radial is very desireable indeed. We were thinking ten rand with the 2-blade wood prop, but now with the 3 blader,.....maybe more. Will shot video and post shortly................................Maj...
