facthunter Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Have to support the Kiwi pilots here. If they waited for calm days they would hardly ever fly. Handling x-winds and gusts , they get plenty of practice. The type of lens used in those vids gives an inaccurate view of what is really happening. Agree they should be taught a bit more wing down into wind technique, in this instance. The technique is even possible on (most) airliners and often it is the flap trailing edge that limits bank available, especially if the nose is held up a bit in the flare. You have to know your aeroplane geometry, same as when you are moving on the tarmac at remote aerodromes. Company check organisations may have their individual policies, I flew to NZ a couple of years ago with Virgin and watching the Kiwi's land at Tulla on 27 with a good northerly and on my trip over and back they were very competent in that area. Much better than the most on the day. Landing without decrabbing is a bit barbarian but seems to happen a lot now. Bloody hard on the aircraft structure. Nev
