Anti Collision lights where turned on, on Pigs, on the ground as a warning that the Radar was/maybe operating .I think the distance to stay clear was 75 feet, from the radome.(I cant realy remember as it was 14 years ago).Anyway we wont let that get in the way of a good story.I did work at 501 Wing Avionics as a black hander.Worked on the Pavetack Pods. I do remember being told when I was there that, 90 percent of blokes having children with their wifes/partners had Girls.Nah, nobody had their sperm effected did they?

Disclamer= I was a Atech.Not Avionics. Av8vfr or Andy from Coffs.Will be more accurate .

I open the door and yell out "Clear Prop or sometimes "Stand Clear Starting" depends on the mood. In a Piper cherokee, since there is no pilot door.I used to open the storm window and yell out."Why is there no 088_censored.gif.2b71e8da9d295ba8f94b998d0f2420b4.gif pilot door" Then yell out "Clear prop". Well I dont yell out the "Why is there no 088_censored.gif.2b71e8da9d295ba8f94b998d0f2420b4.gif pilot door.I just feel like saying that.037_yikes.gif.f44636559f7f2c4c52637b7ff2322907.gif

My dulcet tones have no difficulty penetrating both the fabric and the air for some distance around... 016_ecstatic.gif.156a811a440b493b0c2bea54e43be5cc.gif

A good skill to have Kaz especially if you experience radio failure whilst flying........you just shout out "down wind or turning finals". How do you think you would go with a ten miles inbound call ??? insane.gif.b56be3c4390e84bce5e5e6bf4f69a458.gif

...Nowadays, Joe Public can't venture onto an airfield without an ASIC escort,..

Perhaps you better tell them that. To-date, the only airfield I've landed at which required an ASIC is Albury, which is why I don't have one. It's a lot of expense for a once in two years visit. (one of the other pilots had an ASIC, so I was under his supervision for conformance).

I always look first, then call "CLEAR PROP" before even reaching for the starter button. There's plenty of opportunities for joe public to wander into a live prop area at regional airfields, albeit that they aren't supposed to be there unescorted and have to walk past warning signs to get there. Some people, even after being briefed about not entering, will do so as soon as they are not observed.

I recall on one occasion having to shepherd people out of the path of a taxiing aircraft, putting myself between it and them with arms outstretched. Even then I had to call out a warning and physically stand in front of a couple of people to prevent them stepping forward!

My instructor always opens a door and says "Clear to start...Starting!" It makes a lot of sense to me. However, I (with an open door too) still say "Clear prop"... Not even sure why I still say that, but I do. 034_puzzled.gif.ea6a44583f14fcd2dd8b8f63a724e3de.gif He hasn't told me off for it, though.

I like "Clear Prop" just for the saying itself...

I think Maj Millard hit the nail on the head... the pilot is ultimately responsible BUT the most important safety aspect to me is that it gives those around the aircraft a chance to stand clear... not too many aircraft smaller than RPT where a good clear call of some description can't be heard...

As always, this site produces interesting comparisons between those who fly from country strips where the ambient noise and traffic are low, and a City airport where there will be engines running up, helicopters and even the fuel truck.

What I do came from a case where an instructor....instructor and a couple of students were standing, talking about a metre in front of my aircraft. They saw me get in, so there was an expectation I was about to take it out. I went through the checks, called clear prop, and there was no movement. I bellowed through the little Cherokee side flap, and there was no response, so I had to get up out of the aircraft and tell them, and they jumped out of the way and were most apologetic, they were just engrossed in what they'd been talking about, and three or four engines were running nearby.

So be wary of just accepting a ritual because people say that's what they do. You have to be absolutely sure there are no people, or as some have said, animals nearby, even if that means getting someone to act as a lookout.

Or as an old C206 used to have written on the side up North, 'Clip Clop', because that's what the locals thought the pilot was saying!003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif

Its a bit like the man with the red flag walking in front of your automobile to warn the horses. Made sense at the time.

Don't laugh... they will soon resurrect that practice when the people who say 40kph isn't slow enough in school zones garner enough votes!

Can't say I've ever seen one.008_roflmao.gif.692a1fa1bc264885482c2a384583e343.gif 067_bash.gif.26fb8516c20ce4d7842b820ac15914cf.gif.Alan.

:roflmao:Took me a sec, but that's funny! 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

Ps. I yell "Clear Prop" myself and have a good look! I even yell it when I prop start... probably a bit pointless since you're the only one in the way of the prop in that case!

Nothing wrong with that Tomo, it's just an audible reminder to step back when you've swung the prop, just imagine if your ' Clear Prop ' suddenly turned Blood Red. 037_yikes.gif.f44636559f7f2c4c52637b7ff2322907.gif

My propellor is always "clear" when spinning fast.

Hand proping my small (very) plane dos'nt leave much room to "step back", it also makes you suck in your gut, LoL

I need a handle to steady myself when proping as the leading edge of the wing touches the back of the leg,

I looked at a DH otter yesterday at "Halveston's" boat yard, I tried to upload the pic. Just wondered how to hand prop a large radial engine,

When standing on water

Just warn your passenger before yelling... scared my instructor one day yelling it out, probably a tad loud! 025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif

And ignore people who laugh at you for being loud. I know people who laugh and tell you that you are making a noise, but you are doing it for a reason. It startles people even if they don't know what it means, and they become aware that there is an aircraft about to do something.

Does anyone remember a movie where the (actor) pilot yells "clear prop" ...but the aeroplane was powered by jet engines? I don't remember much else from this poor-plot movie but that part I do.

This may be a possible alternative solution to the carbon tax.
