Tomo Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 Had a brilliant day out at the airfield today!! Met up with a few forumites and even got to go for a run in Rob's(?) Drifter, which is a lovely machine. Flying the J3 Cub was brilliant!! Such a nice aeroplane, and it's pretty neat flying from the back seat! I have some video I'm working on, so hopefully that will be uploaded in the next day or so. Thanks for a great day guys, see you there tomorrow afternoon! 2
kaz3g Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I'm going to be in Gympie for the next couple weeks fleet servicing for a company there. Hopefully I'll find some time to head over to the airfield and do some flying!Look out for me! Last time I was there was 1986 when I did a check in a Grob motor glider during holidays. You might get a chance to do some soaring as well? I also did my CS and R endorsements in a C210 at Marroochy while I was up there. Enjoy kaz
Guest Maj Millard Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Great machine the old J3. I was wandering aimlessly at a californian airport one time where an oldtimer had pulled one out. He asked me if I could swing his prop which I did, and then he uttered the magic words. Want to do a couple of circuts ?. he jumped in the back and I in the front with his old worn cowboy boots on the rudders beside me. What a nice old machine. A classic with nothing to prove from way back then...........................Maj...

facthunter Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Surprising how they will fly with as little as a Continental 65 HP motor, which uses hardly any fuel. PIC in rear seat. You actually get more of a picture(feel ) of where the wheels are. You don't need to look over the nose. The Supercubs fly from the front seat. The Cub is a real classic, really basic simple aeroplane. We should have more of them around..Nev 1
facthunter Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 IF RAAus weights were lifted there would be. This type of aircraft can be kept flying almost indefinately. (The way it is constructed) Don't leave it outside in the weather though..( but I wouldn't leave any aeroplane out in the weather). Nev
Guest Maj Millard Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Just a big UL really, nothing fancy about them. They just look right don't they .Wonder if I could swap the Lightwing for one ?. There is a yellow carbon cub at Montpelier but it just doesn't have the same class, and takes 180hp to do what the old J3 does on 65 hp......................................................Maj...
facthunter Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Probably worth about the same. Some don't have electrics and have the "armstrong" starter. Auster "archer" is similar but the Cirrus minor engine is a bit of an orphan. You could re engine these with the continental 0-200D at virtually no weight increase. Nev
c722352 Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 pleasure was mine Tomo any time your passing you can take Cloud 9 for a fly 1
