Deskpilot Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 INCREDIBLE PIECE OF AVIATION HISTORY This is a video of the first US jet way back in Oct 1942. . It is a classic piece of film I never knew existed. Were you even aware that America HAD a jet that early in the war: 10 months after Pearl Harbor ! You will enjoy this great clip of history. INCREDIBLE PIECE OF AVIATION HISTORY. This is a very interesting little piece of America 's first jet flight, Oct 1942. THIS IS AN of historical film. It covers America 's entry into the Jet Age with the Bell P59A. Note: My favorite part is about the installation of a $2 doorbell ringer to the dash of the P59A to provide vibration so the gauges wouldn't stick. Ya' gotta' love it.... http://www.aircraftowner.com/ videos/view/americas-first- jet-flight-october-1942_1617. html 5

facthunter Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Has it's advantages. You can keep driving along the same street and think it's all new. Just put HOME in the GPS, and write yourself a little note with "reason for trip" on it in case anybody asks why you're there. Nev

facthunter Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Don't try to talk with people who have dementia though. They can't follow what you are saying. Any of you people having trouble with following what I am saying? Nev
Guest ozzie Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Thanks for that, just what i'm going to need when i get older more and more people to try and remember. Great vid too btw. just love the jump seat.
facthunter Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Those early jets had so little thrust for their weight compared with todays stuff. The only reason they flew half reasonable was the fact that Jets give the same thrust when they get faster. Nev
Guest Maj Millard Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 From recently reading a book on Rolls Royce engines, and the jet engine development by Sir Frank Whittle, I recall that the Bell may have been powered by two of Whittles' early engines, similiar to what was used in the smaller first Gloster jet. The Bell appears to be about three times the weight of the Gloster, which is why it probabily needed two engines, and may well account for the mentioned long take-off roll..........................................................................Maj...
Wayne T Mathews Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Hang on, just twigged it. I posted this back in January. No wonder I couldn't remember it.Seniors moment, seniors moment, seniors moment. God I hate getting old. But it beats the alternative, Doug.
eightyknots Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 It was interesting how they fitted a 'dummy prop' to fool the uncleared personnel.
