Justin Hawkins Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Hi guys, I was thinking that my sails could make it another year, but I believe the time has come for them to be replaced. I've found a sailmaker that'll make me a new set using my old sails as a template for $1500 USD. He's not yet made a set for the strut braced drifter, so he'll need my old ones to duplicate. Does anyone know of a good sailmaker that's got a track record for nice fitting sails on the strut braced Austflight drifter ? My old ones are tired. I'm hesitant to use mine for a template, as they seem a tad loose fitting, especially in the tail. Thanks, Justin
pudestcon Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 I can't help you with a supplier in the states justin, but this guy is very good. He made new wingskins for my Thruster http://www.spectrumaviation.com.au/ He also has a website for selecting colours here http://xsymetrix.com.au/wingskin/ie5/index.html?dhtmlActivation=inplace See how you go. Justin Hawkins Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 Sweet! i wonder how much shipping would be to the states.....

Justin Hawkins Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 After talking to Wayne, it seems like his sails are almost $2500 USD after shipping. I wonder if they're worth the extra $1000.......

Justin Hawkins Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 I guess I don't mind paying extra for a better product. Another benefit will be that I can continue flying while they're beinge made. Are the sails Wayne produces fitted with quality zippers and velcro control surface seals like the Austflight sails ?
skyfox1 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Hi Justin his sails have good quality velcro and has seals between control services not sure how the strut braced wings are but my cable braced dont have any zippers not needed. 1
Justin Hawkins Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 After talking to Wayne, I'm gonna go ahead and order the sails from him. Now it's just a matter of choosing colors. I wonder if the colors on his site actually match the sails. I'm thinking dark blue and white.... Any suggestion ? The airframe is red.
pudestcon Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 The skins you see in my avatar to the left here came from Wayne, and I selected them from the website. These colors, being strong colors looked just the same in reality as on the website. I suspect the lighter colors may have some difference in reproduction, but pretty close. Wayne is very good at giving you the info on what you can expect once you talk to him. Pud 1
seb7701 Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 No question about it - if it is Drifter related, Wayne is THE man alright. The extra $1000 is nothing compared to getting ill-fitting sails from someone inexperienced with Drifters. NO ONE knows drifters like Wayne! 3
Justin Hawkins Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 Order placed with Wayne! Thanks for the info fellas. I decided on Dark blue and White.
pudestcon Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Order placed with Wayne! Thanks for the info fellas. I decided on Dark blue and White. Don't forget we need photos once the new skins are in place:smile: Pud
