A pilot is being treated for minor burns in Western Australia's mid-west after crashing his gyrocopter during a lesson this afternoon.

Pilot Albert Gobius was taking off from the airstrip, north of Geraldton, with a student when the crash happened.

The crash happened at 12:00pm AWST.

The gyrocopter was destroyed by fire and one rotor blade was found more than 50 metres away.

Friend and fellow pilot Bruce Barnes says the men managed to free themselves from the burning wreck.

"How bad the burns are I really don't know, they were all covered up," Mr Barnes said.

"But he seemed in fine spirits for what has actually happened out here."

The men were taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital for treatment.
